interesting course

You definitely need to play here more then once ! its a game of 2 9's front nine is open and plays as you see it, greens where quick and true. Every hole is a test on the back 9, with dips and slopes and club selection is really important with some shorter irons off the tee much better option ( in hindsight. )

Close to the Edge

Enjoyable game, though some fairways could have done with an extra mow. Not an easy course with some testing holes, but that means you have to play.

Front 9 is very open and wide whilst the back 9 is very tight and woodland with wayward shots invariably being lost causes.

(Round played: May 2016 - Score: 97 Handicap: 15.5)

First time on this course, teed off at just gone 5pm on a beautiful Sunday evening in May.

I will write about the boring stuff first what I look for on a course which is easily changeable. It has many ball cleaners on many of the tees. It has 150 yardage markers which are big chunky stakes at the edge of the fairway on every hole which are easily seen which is fab and the course also has ample bins. The greens and fairways are also in fabulous condition.

This is the most schizophrenic course I have ever played (it's my 11th in the area). The opening 9 is pretty much about smashing a driver as close to the green as possible with wide open space for a margin for error. There are a couple of holes which run alongside of the road on the right but there is space if you over fade the ball. This part of the course is ontop of the hill with lovely views similar to that which you would see from Stinchcombe Hill GC. But it has lovely Cotswold stone walls and some tall mature trees.

Then in the returning 9 holes you (where some of the nicest holes I have every played happen to be) sends you down the hill where you can imagine used to be small cattle fields. Here the course gets very tight and if you are slightly way wards you are O.O.B which always seemed to be on the right. You need a club in your armory which is straighter rather than longer.

This is a truly lovely course which has a nice mix of golf holes, I it did feel like I was playing two different courses at times. The second half isn't particularly forgiving which I could see annoying some players and the lay of the land makes it unsuitable for people who don't enjoy walking. But for the courses within a 30 minute drive of Thornbury this is the nicest I have played.

The first nine on this course are in a beautiful parkland setting and are a real treat to play. The second nine, which appear to have been added at a later date are in sloping shrub land and require a high degree of accuracy to achieve a reasonable score.

Good front 9 and a tight back 9. Some holes are squeezed in around the back. Lots of hills which makes it good fun with a golf cart!

Like all courses at this time of year the greens are being dressed and prepared for the coming season, however with tram lines quite obvious on half the greens it does detract from the overall experience, having said that it is still a testing and enjoyable course, the staff are friendly and bar and changing facilities are as expected

Have played this Course several times now and enjoyed it very much even though the back nine is a little tight.
The only criticism I have with this course is the bunkers which are inconsistent, some having very little sand in them resulting in hitting rocks just bellow the sand level

To steal(and slightly adapt) a much used phrase from another sport I love, this really is a course of 2 halves. The front nine is reasonably open and allows you to get the driver out a number of times but the back nine is a much tighter affair making for a different kind of challenge - the club captain recommended to me that I just use my 7 iron throughout the back nine - a piece of advice that I, and so many before me I am sure, stupidly ignored. Still, lesson learned for next time and there will be a next time as I found this a very interesting and enjoyable course to play. Add to that the friendly nature of staff and members alike and I feel sure Cotswold Edge is going to be a regular stop on my tour of local(ish) courses.
