Farnham Estate Golf Club

This stunning parkland course is spread over 500 acres of rolling countryside and dense woodland. The two nines are quite contrasting in nature. The gentle but challenging journey on the front nine explores the undulating meadows of this magnificent estate while the back nine is a more vigorous test of golf, traveling through denser more rugged woodland. The course opens with a gentle par four, but from the second onwards, the golfer can expect to have every aspect of their game tested to the limit. Bunkers are not in plentiful supply at Farnham, but each one is very well positioned and in the main, quite large and flat. They are not manicured as one might expect, but aesthetically natural which is the overriding feeling of the whole estate. The greens are a near-perfect texture and allow for a wide variety of possible pin positions, facilitating the enjoyment of all categories of golfer. The contours are interesting but sensible. This par 72 course contains a good mix of holes. Many golfers will no doubt find the second quite a long par four while the fourteenth is a drivable one, especially if the wind is in your favour. Only time will tell what the signature hole will be at Farnham and there are numerous possibilities such as the 2nd, 10th, 15th or 16th. The designer’s own favourite is the fourth, requiring a slight draw off the tee between two large oak trees, opening up a well guarded green with water behind and to the right. A meandering stream and no less than seven lakes are features of this parkland spread, as well as ancient trees, a fairy fort, a wishing well, lots of wild garlic and indeed its fair share of wildlife. This a long track by any standard and to ensure optimum enjoyment and year-long play.

Golf course review of Farnham Estate Golf Club

Played 6th July. Great layout, course in good conditions but greens very slow. Good deal 80e for 2 with a buggy. Unfortunately no clubhouse, just a collection of portacabins.

Golf course review of Farnham Estate Golf Club

A fantastic course set around the south of Farnham Lough, a few miles out of Cavan Town.

Although only a few years old, this course has already matured rapidly. Many of the fairways and greens have been hewn out of woodland, but you wouldn't know it when playing.

We played after a weekend of deluges - only drying for us on the day - and yet the grounds survived it very well. The greens are like snooker tables and you could be forgiven for practising your putting on the tees.

The course has been panned out to play in a largely clockwise direction - it certainly hasn't been crammed in. This aspects adds very much to the uniqueness of each hole. No two holes are "alike". Although not hilly, it's not flat either - you may have to take your bets on a few blind shots, for example on the shortish but "tight" 10th.

You will use every club in your bag to get around this one, the par 4s are generally a decent drive and a middish-to-long iron. The bunkers are set in whispy grass and are largely reminiscent of links type. Because of the lie in fairway bunkers, I was often tempted to try a 5-wood out of the fairway-beaches (several!) I found myself in.

There's enough width in the fairways to give the more wayward of us half-a-chance, but beware the really wild Tee-shots. For those, it's likely to be a reload!

Rolling grasslands are complemented as they give way to forested woodlands for the back nine. If the golf's not so good, the views are stunning!

A beautiful setting, on a course which has the characteristics of parkland, woodland, and links - with a bit of water lobbed in for good measure. A real challenge for the good golfer, and a bag of fun for those, like me, who have to work on everything.

The facilities are basic, but new and clean. But why hold back on a new clubhouse etc when that course is there to be played? The staff are extremely friendly.

Our group travelled over 100 miles to get to this one, and we're going back next month!

Signature Hole? For me the 2nd. The view downhill from the tee, to a green in a glade protected by small river/pond in front reminded me of the stuff you see on telly from Augusta!

Play it - you'll love it.

Golf course review of Farnham Estate Golf Club

A new course built on a massive plot of land. The holes are strung out across the estate with hardly any parallel fairways. The back 9 only opened at the end of 2009, and it shows as the drainage channels make the fairways look a bit like a running track. However given a few years these will bed in nicely.
No clubhouse as yet, just portakabins but the people there were very welcoming and friendly. A good course with excellent shape to the holes, bunkers make you think about where you want to play to.
A strokesaver or equivalent would have been handy in a few places as depth perception is tricky, especially the tee shot over the water at the 18th!!
The greens were excellent, with even the tees better than most courses greens!! Given time and a decent clubhouse this place would be up the rankings even higher.

New course so not many facilities but the course itself is excellent - the back nine is through forest - each hole standing alone, with trees at the side and rear on some holes...
