Very disapointed! The course is in fair nick, but it comes accross as an outsized pitch and putt. Half the course in a dull flat field, and the other in a very hilly one (which was more interesting). As a newbie a decent map on the scorecard would have helped, with several of the holes having a considerable amount of rough between the end of the fairway and the green, and others not, it's impossible to judge your approach. On the hole I missed the fairway right, on to the neighbouring one, only to find a that (only on this hole) I'm OB!! Not that I've played a vast amount of courses, but I've never come accross this before. The much nicer courses I usually play in Essex, charge about £16 midweek, Here it was £20!! I WONT BE COMING BACK!!!

This course is extemely basic. Not one that I play often but is good to play when the wind is blowing making it a real challenge. The hills make the 2nd & 7th holes more of test. The course was very wet when I played & the greens very slow too. Overall I liked the course

Charge 18 holes but fairways not cut and covered in daisies and dandelions so too easy to lose balls. Greens were very good tho but not an enjoyable experience. Needs investment.

Much improved course

Opened in 1998, Wolfedale golf course (home of Charminster Golf Club) was and is a much needed basic 18 hole course situated just two miles north of Dorchester. On a chalky based subsoil, it never gets overwet even in the wettest winters, and can truly be an all year course. Coming along the longish entry road, you can see a few of the holes on your left hand side and also that there are some mighty looking climbs around, but happily this not the entire case. Everything about Wolfedale is that it is a “working” course, the smallish clubhouse, changing rooms and all are adequate, and very satisfactory.\A short walk back down brings you to the 1st hole, a friendly opener of 252 yards, slightly uphill with no real worries. You then immediately enter the second “field” and here lies the bulk of the front nine, most back and forwards down into the valley and up the other side, and there are some long holes and tough climbs in this area.\ The 2nd is another kind drive, and first of a few holes where you cannot see the green from the tee, but all becomes clear as soon as you get a 100 or so yards down the fairways where the green is way down in front of you, and also a small pond on the left front of the green, so favouring the right is probably the better way in. This hole off yellows is 386 yards but can play shorter if a long drive gets over the brow and rolls on down some way. You then back up to the 3rd tee, the first of four par 3’s on the front nine, three of which are pushing the 190 to 200 yards mark. At 180 yards from yellow tees, you are faced with the first hefty climb up to the green, and up to two extra clubs I would imagine are needed to get up and onto the green, which thankfully is quite large.\This is then followed by a brutal 227 yard Par 3, flat but with course boundary and Out of bounds on your left. The main enemy here is the sheer length for a par three and a par here is indeed a bonus. At the 5th, you have a par 5 with a stroke index of 5 (all the fives!), and this is quite a brute at 522 yards. This is not immediately apparent off the tee as again, like the second, you are driving off to an unseen fairway over the brow and can indeed get good distance down over the other side. The trouble starteth here though as the fairway then climbs upwards all the way to the green and two more strong shots are needed (and a helpful wind!) to reach the putting surface. Fret not if you take 4 shots to get on here though, that is probably the norm for us menials. The 3rd par 3, the 6th hole then runs the length of a hedge on your left and uphill to a green 194 yards away, and one where the green I would imagine is oft missed on the right.\Its now back down into the valley again, and up the other side for the 7th, a strong par 4 of 419 yards and a worthy Stroke index one. Another “blind drive” over a brow and to a fairway slightly bending left. On nearing the bottom of the valley, it is noticed that there are white posts on your left, which is presumed to be out of bounds markers between this and the 9th fairway. This is quite naughty actually as there is no indication on the card, or on the tee that there is oob between this and the 9th and as it is very easy to venture down there and find it oob – this really should be looked at as the first time visitor could well be miffed off with this. The hole in fact is a strong and good one, with the approach once again on a plateau up the other side of the valley, again another that more club is probably needed.\The last par 3 of the front nine, and the shortest at 121 yards, no real problems unless you miss the green left, as the valley beckons and a ball could very easily run right on down to the bottom, and further away than when you tee’d off!\The 9th is yet another long par 4 where at least the entire hole can be seen from the tee, unlike the 2nd shot where you are looking at another blind shot steeply up and over the brow – make a mental note where the green is when coming down off the tee!\You are now back up to the top of the course and head through to the field where you played the 1st. The good news, well other than the 17th, all the climbs are gone! The 10th, 11th and 12th are all in this area and are three shortish par 4’s back and forth holding no real problems. Crossing over the track to the 13th, this is the first of two 335 yard holes out and back, both slightly doglegging right, and the first where any trees and bushes are in play!\A short path then leads to the last playing area of the course, this holding the last four holes, the first of which, the 15th is a par 5 of 476 yards, again playing to an unseen green from the tee. The hole actually bends around to the left although I would imagine many miss it on the right hand side and the slope tending to take it this way. This then leads to the 16th, probably what the home club might call their “most memorable hole” (some might say “little b…er!”) – 121 yards downhill, and in truth just a wee flick! – Ha, be very wary, long or left is very unpleasant falling steeply away and many have seen the perfect shot fall off and end up 50 yards away.\The aforementioned 17th is the only tough climb in the back nine, and this is made worse in that from the 16th green, you have to walk back down about 75 yards to the tee. Although just 335 yards, this feels longer due to it being uphill all the way. After the climb, a gentle short par 4 18th awaits, the only problem here if you hook left and OOB.\Precis: A very useful pay and play course for South Dorset, and one which has certainly improved over the years. It will never be in the same league as the Broadstone’s of this world, but it is very playable and testing, and will keep you fit.\\\

Quirky little course this. Front 9 and back 9 totally different. Bit rough around the edges, the Belfry it's not. But an endearing course made interesting and challenging by the natural contours. Greens decent. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
