A Championship Course where the Annual Portuguese Masters is played. Course is always in tip-top condition.
As can be expected the course is very interesting with some extremely tricky holes. You need to play it a second time to really enjoy it, first time around can be rather daunting for the average golfer.

Fantastic condition, great course. Back 9 seems to have water on virtually every hole and very very long. We also played the vale do lobo (royal) and personally i thought this was better.

I played this course in mid march with my dad on a golf breaks tip (in conjunction with the nearby Laguna and Millennium courses). To give you some idea of the effect this course had on me, I still have pictures from the round as my background and screen saver on my laptop (as does my dad). We played the course as part of a package and enjoyed it some much that we played to play it again on the last day (after playing 18 holes in the morning!).
If you play this course on the same day as playing one of the other courses in the group, and you stay in the hotel on the course and you play after 2.30 then it costs £40 incl buggy (vs £110 if you just book to play on its own).
The course is in very good condition and is split into 2 distinctly different 9 holes. The front 9 is relatively straightforward with relatively open fairways (you need to score well here to make up for whats coming next). The back 9 has water .. lots of water everywhere. Provided you play very safe, then you can just about get round, but take a camera for the views and plenty of spare balls.
Top tip for playing here . Arrive early (we got free range balls in the deal and there are good practice facilities). Spend 95% of your practice time chipping from the long rough onto the fast greens (as the rough is very thick and this cost me 5+ shots over each round), 4% time driving/warming up, 1% putting. The greens are very fast, practicing will just get you scared!
I am already trying to work out when I can come back to this course

Love love love this course. You have to think about every shot due to clever bunker placement etc. Risk and reward nowhere more than the double fairway hole 14th. The practise facilities are excellant so arrive early and take advantage. Five tee positions on each hole, Ladies tees are very generous (so my other half tells me .... over and over again!)

Well be prepared for a high score - and if you play off more than 5 and think you can still play from the back tees and enjoy yourself ....forget it! Its still a really long way from the next set of tees....
Great course - recommend playing with a buggy in the height of the summer - no one on it because they think its too hot and in good nick as getting the course ready for the Portuguese Masters.....
Usually includes free range balls (which I didn't know until after I'd tee'd off!)
Lovely lovely course

Brilliant all round, especially if you have the foresight to pre-book your round and save yourself £50 on the advertised green fee.

a very well designed course with a shed load of water on the back nine. it may be a european tour event venue but for me not worth the £130 a round not in a million years all the holes look amazing on the tee but fairways and greens need alot of work i would choose the old course every time over this but for me one to miss the green fee is just to high

Water, Water, Water. It cost me a fortune in balls, but what a great experience. Try it when you visit Villamoura.

this course was prob the second best i have played on only being tipped by torrequebrada in torremelinos due to the last few greens on the back nine that were pretty sandy and had lots of repair patches on them. but what a course. it was such a great course nice and tight with lots of tree lines fairways and i had the game of my life round it. truely stunning views and the food service in the bar and grill was fantastic. can only fault it for the greens on this occasion

Played this course 2 weeks before the Portuguese Open and it was in fantastic condition! Greens were lightning quick, fairways were perfect...BUT, because the course is pretty short by PGA standards now, they have left the rough to grow and it was REALLY thick.
Now I know how the guys feel playing the US Open!!!
Overall it was an excellent experience though and I would thoroughly recommend playing the course if you get a chance.
