Wasted potential
Played at Wokefield park earlier this week. I can only describe it as perhaps the most disappointing course I’ve played in a long time. Not the worst by any means, but the most disappointing. Why? Because this place could genuinely be one of the best courses and golf facilities in Berkshire.
It has an extensive pitching area, a large putting green, a driving range to practice in, but it is all unkept and undermaintained. The bunkers in the pitching area are full of stones and weeds. The driving range mats are worn and tattered, and the range balls are (pardon the pun) hit and miss (some don’t even have dimples!).
The course itself? Could be incredible, but again the issue seems to be maintenance and a bit of TLC.
The course is interesting. Plenty of lengthy holes, some amazing fairway bunkers and course architecture. Great undulation on the fairways, great water features, plenty of risk-reward holes and large greens with great run-off areas to punish errant approach shots.
However, the tee boxes are an uneven mess, both in terms of being flat and having grass cut at the same length. The fairways are overgrown and unkept, and the greens are a sandy, bobbly mess. Nothing roles straight and true. It’s basically hit and hope on the greens.
You could argue for £22 that I’ve got what I paid for, but I’m leaving this review to implore management to improve this place. It could genuinely be incredible with proper maintenance, and be a place that could charge £45-50 for visitors.
Pace of play was also poor, which I imagine is a reason for lowish prices and poor maintenance (ie. Cramming as many paying visitors in large groups back to back to maximise profits as far as possible).

The course is well layed out and has some excellent feature holes (12th, 14th my personal favourites) but with so many society players, the course suffers a little from un-repaired pitch marks, but beware, the worse part about the track is that it is 4 and half hours per round, minimum. On the Sunday we played it was well over 5 hours. Part of the reason for this is that the course is not geared up for societies as the rough is too long and typically means anyone that is a little wayward has probably lost their ball.
The buggies were a little overpriced.
The drinks are massively overpriced, but you wouldn't have expected anything else from a De Vere hotel. (fortunately we had a 30% discount on drinks).
The venue is okay, and for the money we paid via YGT, the golf and food was excellent value but it could have been so much better.
What was a surprise was the poor service. Very impersonal and geared towards a corporate market.
There was almost non existent waiting staff in the restaurant, we effectively cleared our own plates and they had run out of deserts and biscuits for the cheese and had no port. At times there was only 1 person behind the bar trying to serve about 30-40 people. Service was slow!!! some of the chaps even cancelled their lunch orders it was taking so long.
All rooms were booked as twins and yet many of the group were allocated double beds. It shouldn't be that difficult for a major hotel chain to get that right.
.
Having said that, purely for the golf, then I guess if it wasn't for the fact that we are 100 miles away, yes I would play it again. But I wouldn't go out of my way to play it unless I was already in the area and knew that I wasn't going to be stuck in a 5 hour round, so choosing the right tee time is crucial.
Good luck.

The course is a very interesting park land course with plenty of blind tee shots and you really need to think your way around the course. If you play this for the first time - buy a yardage book, or use a GPS app.

Course during the heavy rain
The course is great for challenging your game. It was well maintained but has suffered during the monthsOf heavy rain fall. I play here most of the time and will continue too.

Slow play
The course is very good and is used for corporate events and societies. If you play when these events are on expect a long day. Last week we walked off at the thirteenth hole after 4.5 hours, and Monday it took us 5 hours (2 ball). Only saw the Marshall once on Monday, not at all last week.Reviewer Rating

The evening meal turned out to be a 3 course buffet which provided limited choice and was not to the standard one would expect from a golf hotel complex. We were a group of 15 and given only 2 tables of 7. The bedroom was good. Overnight the course had dried out a little, but was still muddy. Overall very disappointing.

Tough course
Tough course with good challenging holes. Just starting to get a bit muddy but more frustrating was the long penal grass just off the fairway which necessitated much time looking for balls and sometimes losing them. Likewise, Too many leaves on some fairways which also slowed play down. Drinks in the bar vey expensive!(Round played: Nov 2021 - Score: 102 Handicap: 15.9)

Could be fantastic but...
I have just done a golf trip to De Vere Wokefield (8-10 Oct). Like many other comments I can confirm two things: 1.) the greens are shocking, actually is a disgrace for such a facility. 2.) the course plays very slow, 5 1/2 hrs, 5 hrs, and 5 1/4 hrs for the 3 rounds we played. There are just too many tee times and then they put one/two balls between 4 balls! It made the overall experience disappointing. To give a balanced review, the rooms were clean and comfortable, the breakfast and dinners were ok and the bar had a good selection of drinks. It seemed there was a shortage of staff given the volume of people at the venue. This can be a great golf break, just sort the greens and speed of play.Reviewer Rating
