Seaton Carew Golf Club
Tees Road, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, County Durham, TS25 1DE United Kingdom
Over the years since its creation in 1874, the finest golfers in the country have played the links at Seaton Carew including the legendary Harry Vardon, J H Taylor, James Braid and several other Open Champions. Dr Alister MacKenzie lengthened the Course in 1925 to 6,500 yards and designed new holes eastwards including the planting of over 2,000 buckthorn bushes. In 1937 Walter Hagen played an exhibition match at Seaton Carew during a European Tour and commented "It is a splendid course, the links are well groomed. It is not an easy course and provides a good test of golf. It is one I would like to play quite often".
By varying the playing sequence of the 22 Holes there are up to 5 course layouts, three of which are played regularly, the Old, Brabazon and Micklem and all present a varied and challenging test with plenty of twists, turns, dunes and bunkers. The Brabazon has hosted the Competition of the same name, just one of a series of R&A and EGU Events held over the years, whilst the Micklem Course was used for the Carris Trophy in 1995 when Graeme Storm pipped Justin Rose by a single shot. Oliver Wilson's 66 remains the Course Record for that layout. Book a Tee Time

This is a "proper" links course and, consequently, a very tough test. The wind plays a massive part in how the course plays and if you stray off the fairways you are dead. The humps and hollows make local knowledge invaluable and casual golfers, especially higher handicappers, may find it all a bit too tough, especially as there are no views to take in other then Teesside's chemical industry. In saying all of that, you do get the feeling you are playing golf how it was originally meant to be played and the clubhouse has an cosy bar, extensive dining room and pro shop with friendly staff throughout. Unusually, the course has 22 holes in total meaning members and visitors can enjoy 4 different layouts.

Played Old course twice in December. Course was in excellent condition, with only one winter green. Some excellent holes (Doctor, Lagoon and Snag were my favourites). A great course to play and really good value for money for a links course of this standard.

This is what links golf is all about. Having played it twice, the first when it was a lovely still summer evening the second on a colder, breezy summer evening it really highlights how much the elements can alter the way a course plays.
The greens and the course layout is first class, but a very stiff challenge to all abilities.
REmarkably good value for mney if you can get there on a Monday and take advantage of the accepted 2-Fore!-1 vouchers.
Links golf isn't my favourite, by any stretch of the imagination - I'm not good enough yet to get round that successfully..... but I know that this is the way the way the golfing gods wanted the game to be played - from that point of view alone it is well worth a trip round.

Used concession card very cheap.Course well maintained typical links. The three flag systemn is a good idea if explained (different colour for front centre and back) but causes some confusion for visitors on where to play next.
