Played here earlier in September 2020, never played the course before and was a bit sceptical of the 'Play Golf' franchise (not sure why). Was pleasantly surprised, excellent facilities and the course played exceptionally well compared to others in Essex at this time of year. Greens were easily some of the best I've played on after some of the weather we have had recently, fairways were a bit dry but the rough was well maintained. Challenging short course, with lots of walking and views across Essex (if you can forgive the A12). Will be going back and considering becoming a member at this course.

Greens not great, people need to start repairing pitch marks would help, but still a bit patchy, some bunkers are perfect others are very stoney. Fairways in good condition played ok considering the weather we've had, but compared to a few other courses I've recently played nowhere near as good. Staff and facilities are very good and the shop is well sticked and very friendly staff.

Let's be honest!

Firstly, the overriding feeling you get as you walk around the facilities is one of a profit oriented feeling. Almost as if loyal golf members have dropped lower down the pecking order, behind a family of 4 that want to play "mini-golf" and have a meal.
This leads into my next point/observation. If you want turn up as a golfer, to practice or play you are cast aside to pave the way for a more fashionable clientele. From my own personal experience you cannot use the great driving range on the weekend between 11am-16:00pm because the "mini-golf" is open and of health and safety concerns! Which screams poor planning of where its located and poor construction!
This club used to be somewhere people wanted to play, now its a place that drives members out and looks only to strengthen its bank balance.

Enjoyable but slow

Good compact course with excellent facilities. Very slow competition play in front of us that needed to be managed better. One temp tee which on the website said they would never need. Greens quick, bunkers okra

Reasonable Pay and Play Course

Reasonable Pay and Play Course, Bunkers are very Poor and and the course in general could be manicured better, but this probably down to poor management, the Restaurant was a Gem when it first opened, but the standard of food has dropped-off.

Was sceptical following recent reviews but very pleasantly surprised. the actual holes are well disgned and the bunker placement is excellent. the American Golf shop is packed full. the fiarways where in good condition. the holes are tight and accuracy is a must off the tee.
i would say that the bunkers need to a bit better as do have a number of stones in them (not good for the wedges) and the greens could do with being cut shorter.
very enjoyable, will play again and may even join...
i would also say that despite the location the road and train noise is minimal and really wasn't something you overly notice. the walk between holes can be long so get a buggy or trolly if you struggle slightly.

Very enjoyable course to play. The holes are reasonably varied making for a more enjoyable experience. The fairways and greens are constantly being maintained and very rarely will you find that holes are closed due to poor weather or that you are using temporary greens.

The facilities for food and drink are not great but a huge rebuilding is taking place and will improve things significantly.

This course has definitely improved since I last played it, particularly the fairways. But the bunkers still need a lot of attention - much too hard and stony. Nice friendly people in good pro shop and very reasonable prices for a round. Good driving range but bar needs a major refurbishment.

A local course. Rounds are very reasonable for what you get. Excellent range. There does seem to be some improvement work going on and there has been some noticeable improvement in the greens.

Tight course

Now called Lexden Woods, the course is very challenging with tight, narrow fairways and unforgiving rough. Though not particularly long, you certainly have to be straight with your shots and think your way around. Given the amount of rain which has fallen recently, the course was still playable, with temporary tee boxes. The greens were surprisingly good. Will certainly return once the weather improves.

Work being done

I am a member at this course and the new owners doing a great deal of work . If coming to play the course please bear that in mind . They are doing a good job . To rectify the bunkers is a major project and many are GUR . I think it is a clever lay out as it is not reach for the driver and let it rip .

Confusing Tees

Nice length and challenging course. Finding way to the next Tee isn't well signed. Distance markers not obvious.
