What the club says: Cleeve Hill is a magnificent heath land course located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. From a commanding position in the Cotswolds, breathtaking views are available over an area taking in the Forest of Dean, Severn Vale, the Malverns - and beyond to the Black Mountains and the Brecons.

Set in 1,000 acres of Cleeve Common, the truly awesome vistas from the course embrace 10,000 years of human occupation - with prehistoric and Roman settlements punctuating a landscape rich in wild flowers. Rare orchids, the Roman snail and various species of butterfly bring added fascination to the scene. For golfers about their business, the setting is idyllic, inspiring and refreshing.

never fails to impress

Four of us set out at 10:30 on a windy but dry day and had a wonderful entertaining walk around the course ending at half three.

Gorgeous Views

If your legs are up for the challenge, and this course isn't easy walking, then you'll be rewarded with a lovely course and some outstanding views.

The greens, tees and fairways are good rather than outstanding, but some of the holes are really pretty. The holes I loved were all downhill, 9, 10, 17 & 18, but the views as you work your way down to the 13th are stunning.

The fairways are all pretty wide and the greens aren't the trickiest you'll play, so the main protection is when the wind blows. There's little to protect you from it.

The clubhouse certainly has seen better days, but there was a warm welcome there and in the pro shop.

I would absolutely recommend Cleeve Hill.

Cleeve Hill GC

You feel as if you are stepping back in time playing a hill top links style course where man and nature have worked together to shape a challenging and at times exhilarating golfing experience. Lots of different challenges on almost every hole. Several blind shots where accuracy is rewarded. Most rough not too punitive whilst the small greens are well guarded but true and can be read with confidence. The 13th is a simply stunning hole - one of the best I have ever played whilst the long uphill par 3 16th is as tough as they get, well it was for me! Not everyone will like Cleeve Hill because it is not a manicured, antiseptic parkland course. There is plenty of gorse, plenty of rabbit scratchings, sheep dung and every green is protected by low electric cords but I guess (apart from the electricity) this is how most heathland courses appeared in 1927 when Cleeve Hill opened. So, if you want to feel invigorated, challenged, amused and wowed in equal measure whilst taking in some stunning views then you must play here at least once.

perfect conditions despite wet weather

we played in the afternoon to take advantge of twilight rates. information about availability of food at cafe and restaurant was absolutely abysmal and how the cafe could be closed on a school holiday Monday beats me! Despite info to the contrary, the kitchen was serving up bacon and sausage baps at lunchtime so we could have enjoyed a bap before venturing out onto the course. Which was magnificient when all around were carry only or even closed. Great tees, fairways and greens.

a great day out

Setting off just after one to tackle all 18 holes taking advantage of the twilight rate. The fairways are grand, the greens remarkable and the views terrific. We were all back by quarter to six as night fell! and found the clubhouse and toilets all shut. A great experience from the off. Before we left we visited the Cotswold Hill Cafe which is now part of the Golf complex; a touch pricey but welcome nevertheless as the canteen is closed at the club. Pizzas are on the menu so fab.

What a mad, weird amazing course this is!! Plays like an inland links, greens looked awful but ran pretty true. Very difficult to hold the greens with approach shots - maybe go for bump n runs!! The views go on for miles, truly beautiful. It’s a tough walk, and very hilly. Definitely one to tick off the list.

Fantastic and Frustrating

To be fair the frustrating part of the title is just because I'm not very good at golf.

Scenery isn't going to get much better than on this course. It is stunning all the way around, I've played lots of local course with spectacular scenery and this is probably the best. The members I played with were top notch and I look forward to seeing them again.

The greens were really good except the one which had been previously vandalised which isn't the club fault. There is a lot of evaluation

Fairways and semi rough merge into each other and it isn't always easy to see where the hole goes. With lots of blind shots this is a course which probably should be played twice. When I played it was very windy which isn't uncommon on top of the highest peak of the Cotswolds. This is the closest I've played to links golf, trees are not common here and you rely on the undulations of the land and hope it doesn't throw your ball into deep grass or gorse.

I see why people liken this course to Painswick because of the quarrying activity which has scared the landscape, however it is no where near as tight and is much longer. You need to be smart of the tee here and the driver isn't always the best option as it can land you in trouble even though the courses appears very wide, there is advantages to playing the fairway. Most the rough is fairly short however clumps of it are very thick in areas which did mean we ended up look for balls for a long time in our fourball which I did find frustrating, especially as I lost a few.

This is a course I would recommend playing it will stay with me for a little while. I have good memories.

Sand traps

Beautiful course with fantastic panoramic views on most holes. Bunkers however in desperate need of sand and the large groups of senior members need some review of their etiquette with regard to letting faster groups through, really spoils the experience when held up for fourteen of eighteen holes.

A society MUST

As they advertise, possibly the best picturesque course in England
The views on this course from most holes is breathtaking
The staff here are superb. Great service from the guys in the golf shop, clubhouse and course
The course itself is in great condition, the greens are exceptional. My complements to the ground staff.
The course itself is challenging to say the say the least. Especially today in the wind.

Sitting atop the Cotswolds, played on a day when the wind was really blowing. It is a nice track and some of the views are just spectacular, but there's a lot of public across the course which can be both distracting and frustrating. However, it's a bargain after 1pm, so totally worth it.
