What the club says: Abernethy is a traditional Highland golf course, built on natural moorland, and surrounded by majestic pine trees. The course is suitable for golfers of all standards. Casual visitors will cope perfectly well with the friendly course layout while low handicappers will need to bring their very best short game to score well.

What a superb 9 hole course and found out that the second a par 3 over the road is one of the Hiden Gems in golf, the 8th with the War Memorial seemed very apt on Armistice Day and managed to not hit it on both 9's. Was on winter tees and greens front 9 but on the back nine they moved to the full greens. Out of season so unfortunately couldn't sample the cakes in the clubhouse bit will be back even if it is to eat the cake. In all a bargain for £10 for the round and honesty system in place.

The best 9 hole course I have ever played, and the setting is spectacular. You weave in and out of highland pine forests, with views of the Cairngorms whenever you are in the open.

The course is short, and if you drive well you could score very well, but a course whose SSS matches the par (66), tells you the real story. With any mishaps from the tee you could find yourself in foot high heather or in the trees, and suddenly your score will rocket. Not much point in taking a drop into another pile of heather! If you do drive well, then the small, but slopy greens will test your short game.

Overall, if you play the shortness will reward you, but if you stray or are poor around the greens this course will punish you. Do not be fooled by the courses soft look!

Friendly clubhouse and tee times not needed. Pitch up and play one of the true hidden gems (and it is over 100 years old so it truly is and feels like a historic piece of greenery)
