What the club says: The renowned golf course architect Donald Steel said "Only in Britain can one sample the true flavour of seaside golf of which West Lancashire is a perfect example"
West Lancashire has been a final qualifying course for The Open in 1976, 1983, 1991, 1998, 2006 and most recently in 2008. In 1976 four young professionals competed in the final qualifier at West Lancasire - Nick Faldo, Berhard Langer, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam - all went on to win the coveted "Green Jacket" of the US Masters.
The Club's place in history is assured as it has its name on The Amateur Championship trophy, one of the 24 clubs that contributed to the cost of the trophy when the competition was first established in 1885. The first winner was Alan Macfie a West Lancashire member. The club also has a notable record for ladies golf too, for in 1891 The West Lancashire Ladies Club was formed, the first of its kind in South West Lancashire.

The course was in magnificent condition and a great challenge from the northerly breeze!

A classic links course
This was my second visit in 9 months and won't be my last. Enjoyed the visit by train after staying at dormy in Formby and what a great fun way to experience this wonderful links. We'd just had 2 days at Formby and my playing partner is a 4 handicap member of a links course on the south coast (Littlehampton) and on the first nine turned to me and just said 'This is the best links I've ever played!' QED
Can't wait to go for my 3rd visit and conquer the SI 14th as it has killed me both times now!
Love this place.

Fantastic Course
Played for the first time - warm welcome and great banter with the starter (as well as some handy tips). Brilliant golf course, all aspects of a true links course encountered ; stunning views and course in great condition. Rivals its more esteemed local courses, yet I felt plays a bit more forgiving allowing a more pleasurable experience. If I could afford to, I'd be there every week.Reviewer Rating

Was as good as been told
Looked forward to the visit, didn't disappoint. If you like links you will love it here. Lovely greens and fairways holes look good to the eye. Loved it so much rebooked to play again. Lucky not too windy and didn't get in many bunkers I imagine it would be really difficult in windy weatherReviewer Rating

Exceptional course - a definite top 100 UK course
Very welcoming, friendly staff. Ray the starter is great fun and full of information. Gavin Abson is a true gent and very expereinced working at Loch Lomond and Troon before this.Good practice facility with room for around 10 players at a time.
Best greens I have played on - beautiful quality, interesting, fair to read and run so true. No stones on the greens either due to the quality of the bunker sand.
Fairways are sooo firm and downwind the ball will fly and run and run!
3 or 4 nice elevated tees with really great views over the sea - fav was 13th.
Really enjoyed my round. Would go back in summer as I imagine the sunsets are incredible over the sea, and having a pint on the amazing balcony of the club house.
Great value £260 for a 4 ball this winter including bacon roll and coffee £65 each). Might consider using the train as Hall Road Merseyrail station is right outside and connects to Southport and Liverpool (you could even stop at Formby!)
If Tommy Fleetwood uses this as his favourite course (especially through winter when he is in the UK) then its good enough for me!
"Truest links on the English golf coast"...... I'd agree 100%
Look out for my full course review
PS 3 hour 45 is the expected pace of play which is very good, helped my minimal green to tee walking......well laid out course!
40 minutes from the M6/M62 intersection so very accessible

Disappointed but good
Number 71 in the top 100 !!! Well not in mine, I little bland and only the 13th and 14th remotely made any of the 4 of us, get excited, its an excellent course but I have seen many many more that are better, I truly don't understand the top 100 lists, and it does start to make you wonder how they come to their assessments, don't get me wrong, it is not a bad course at all, and was in good condition, but I left hardly remembering any of it, and that is what disappoints meReviewer Rating
