What the club says: Founded in 1892, Ventnor Golf Club is the oldest golf club on the Island. A downland course, set on Rew Down above Ventnor, with magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and the English Channel.

5700 yards, SSS68, Par 70 it provides an interesting and enjoyable challenge for golfers of all standards. It is unusual in that it is a twelve hole course with seven of the holes being played twice. Alternative tee boxes on two of these holes providing a marked variation to the way they are played.

The greens are first class and are rated amongst the best on the Island. Some of them have to be seen in the low winter or summer evening sunlight to appreciate their subtle contours. With four par 3s, twelve par 4s and two par 5s, there is something to suit everyone whether or not you are long off the tee.

Great views

Enjoyable round at Ventnor with great sea views and peaceful surroundings. Downland course with sloping fairways. Played on a Wednesday morning in the Easter holidays, hardly anyone about and clubhouse shut so you pay your money in an honesty box. Layout with 12 unique holes and 6 repeated ones is a little odd, I got confused on the 9/18th crossed fairways and ended up playing wrong green. Suitable for the higher handicapper as there are not many bunkers and it’s nice and open so little chance of losing your ball. On the other hand, greens are quite small and difficult to hit and putting is not easy. Greens and fairways were in ok condition considering it is maintained by volunteers. I found the holes were a bit samey and would have liked more variation, but overall enjoyed the round, fine conditions and breezed round at own pace.

Ventnor’s Best Kept Secret

Wow, had a fantastic experience at this lovely course, set on the downs above Ventnor. I had heard the course was in poor condition but it was in great shape. Had a brilliant time in the breeze, great challenge. We done the volunteers who run this place! Was super value for money too.

A Real Surprise

I had a real surprise, having read some of the reviews. The course was really well prepared. The fairways were some of the best I've ever played on and the greens were also good. The members, I encountered, were very friendly and encouraging. Well worth a visit. Incidentally, it turned out to be the oldest club on the Isle of Wight and the views are breathtaking.

I enjoyed it but the course was not in good condition. The greens were like fairways. I got the impression the place was run by a handful of people for a handful of players. The people I met were friendly and you have to be happy with ?20 for an all day ticket. I played two rounds and enjoyed my day but doubt I would play there again.

I wanted to play a course with sea views as advertised. I wasn't disappointed in that respect but I have to say the greens were appalling. Even after a cut they were still amateurish I have to say. I enjoyed the course but the greens were a massive let down.
