The full course was open so we played the sea holes for the first time. What a contrast to the front 9.
Super fast greens even in March

Having played there many moons ago, I have to agree with Jeffrey. This course is the equal of its more famous neighbour, Royal Porthcawl, which also has one of the toughest finishes I have ever encountered in its four closing holes.

An excellent test of golf, as most links are.

Very cold day, frozen ground , all temp greens on and many bunkers out of play. Must try to keep ball in play on fairways, otherwise will loose ball in rough. The 13th hole, unlucky for some a relatively short hole, but is a blind 90deg dog-leg off the tee can prove costly; as I found out myself trying to cut the corner. Course itself can be a good test when playing normally, specially if the wind is up.

We paled in very hot conditions and were wanrned that fairways were top dressed..an understatement they were seriously covered in sand and seed which made for unpredictable bounce and roll.
tees were well forward and on uneven surfaces. greens had unven roll. Overall we were left dissapointed after expectations from previos visit.
The pro diescribed the greens as glass...far from it.

unwelcoming course and club

The back 9 looks stunning but is not designed to be enjoyed by the likes of me. The margin for error is too small and the penalties too severe - 5 yards from the fairway on many holes and you'll never see the ball again. This is a typical H S Colt design where you stand on too many of the tees without being able to make out where the intended landing area is. One or two holes like that on a course add variety but here it is overdone to the point where the enjoyment is removed. You need to play the course a number of times before you can have fun because you need experience of it to have any idea where you're supposed to be aiming - as if hitting the ball where you're aiming isn't hard enough when you can actually see where you are trying to hit it! I actually hot the ball quite well for most of my round, but the constant inability to make out the target area (particularly difficult where the inner loop of holes crosses the main course causing extra confusion with extra fairways and tee boxes) and a lack of marker posts to offer any visual guidance at all, detracts from the experience. Such a shame as the dunes offer a stunning setting for what could be so much more enjoyable golfing terrain, as it is at many other courses along the welsh coastline. Only the brilliant green complexes redeem the course. they are brilliantly contoured, and the mounds and hollows around the greens provide a much more enjoyable but challenging test of the short game. If only the course offered a similar balance of enjoyment and toughness for the long game. Sadly it is skewed much too far to the tough end of the spectrum to be enjoyable for a 19 handicapper. This appears to suit the club though, as I was made to feel like a second class citizen for booking online as a visitor unaffiliated to any club. Surprise was expressed by the pro and the captain when they learned I am not a member anywhere. Why shouldnt someone who chooses to play at various courses rather than the same one every week be able to conduct themselves appropriately on a golf course! I was made to feel that they thought I probably would leave divots everywhere and play slowly, because I don't belong to a club, and that they only wanted members of other clubs to play their course, and not just any keen golfers who are prepared to pay a green fee. Well I certainly won't be rushing back, there are many more enjoyable places to play than here.

What a disappointment. Expecting one of the most renowned courses in Wales, I found it scruffy and uninspiring. Had to play the inner loop of dunes holes as the full course was not open - hard to even identify where the fairway was from the tee on these. On two holes we weren't even allowed to use fairway - had to drop in rough - ridiculous. Most of the holes looked too similar, lacking variety and interest to play - as if the greens had just been randomly placed in sometimes completely unsuitable places. Don't understand how it has gained such a good reputation - unlikely to go back.
