Golf course review of Perdiswell Park Golf Club

Played the front 9 when on holiday in area. Nice course in reasonable condition. (Our home club is a municipal.) Greens were good and fairways well cut with decent rough on edges. Only distraction is the number of walkers on the course some of whom don't seem to look. Will use again.

First 9 not the best kept. Second 9 improvement. Very straight, greens not very good at all. Not worth £17.50 a round.

Public course.

Golf course review of Perdiswell Park Golf Club

Review of Perdiswell Park

Perdiswell Park is a municipal golf course in Worcester. No frills, a little untidy, and nothing particularly awe inspiring about the holes. But it’s cheap, not hugely busy, and a reasonable test for high handicappers.

So, what can you expect during a round at “Perdy”? At just 5035 yards off the yellow tees, par 68 and a SSS of 66, the signs that this course maybe not be too demanding are certainly promising for the high handicapper, but with thick rough straddling the fairways, it does have its surprises. Greens are reasonable to good, depending on the weather!

Hole no.1 is 387 yards and, in common with many of the holes, is a straight par 4. There is OB all along the hole on the right hand side, protected by a line of trees and a ditch. To the left is heavy rough, with a mound of trees about 250 yards further down. A solitary tree 220 yards in the middle-left of the fairway can punish those unlucky few. A straight drive up by the tree is the best I can hope for, leaving me with a nice view of the sloping fairway to the green - which has a bunker protecting the right front, and bushes to the rear. I struggle to reach the green in two and 5 is a good score me.

Hole no. 2 is the longest par 4 on the course at just over 400 yards and again, this player needs two good shots to reach it. A wide open fairway gives your drive a big target to aim for, although anything right may find the ditch that straddles the length of the hole. Hopefully your 2nd shot is from the middle of the fairway, but another good shot is required to find the two-tiered green, which has no less than 3 bunkers surrounding back, left and right. Again, a 5’s a good score.

Hole no. 3 is reachable in two at only 319 yards. The ditch is now on your right, with heavy rough and a couple of trees on your right. A fairway bunker on the right hand side may cause some worry, but another good drive gives you a good opportunity to approach the unguarded green. A par is certainly a possibility!

The first par 3 is hole no. 4 at 149 yards. A 6 iron is needed for this short hitter but it’s a straight forward hole but for a front right bunker protecting the green (which seems to be a magnet for my balls!).

Hole no. 5 is another short par 4 and a real par chance for any straight hitter. Far right is the canal, but before that is bush and heavy rough, and a certain lost ball for any missing the fairway that side. The left side of the fairway is much more forgiving, save for a solitary tree. A two tier green with a right hand bunker may seem a smaller target than you are used to, but par is again possible.

The sixth hole is a par 3 with trouble on the left hand side – a wooded area gobbles any wayward ball. The large green has a ditch and a bunker on it’s right.

The par 4 seventh has another wide fairway to hit – and the 2nd hole fairway travels alongside its left hand side, bisected by some short manageable rough. Shots to the right may have less luck, as there are a number of young and old trees to give your second shot some trouble. At 318 yards it’s short, but plays longer in my experience, and the sloping green makes this hole a challenging one. A deep bunker on the left hand side, and backed by conifers for anything overshot, means a 5 is a good score.

Hole no. 8 is as short as they come. Even for me, a PW will reach this 106 yard par 3. But the green is tricky. Slopes on all sides mean putts can just keep on going – and there are bunkers either side.

The front nine finishes with a par 5 dog leg to the left (perfect for this left hander’s slice!). A straight drive still leaves you with much to do, but aim for the tree in the middle of the fairway for your second shot, and you can get to the green in 3. The rough on the right can be a problem to get out of unscathed, and the green here is tough. Pin placement can be downright unfair! Walk away with a 6 and you’ll be happy.

The tenth hole is the longest par 3, just. It’s a 5 iron for me with another testing green, sloping towards the tee. A 4 is a good score.

The next hole is a short straight Par 4 and a real chance for par. A couple of bunkers on the right of the fairway and a clump of trees on your left narrows your approach to the green, but both are avoidable. A recent cropping of bushes on the left of the fairway has even made this hole easier!

Hole no.12 is a short dogleg par 4 at 259 yards. A straight drive gives you a short second onto a reasonably sized green. But beware over hitting. The ground slopes away steeply into deep rough both at the back and to the right of the putting surface. Going left off the tee can mean trouble. Your ball will be in the rough with some trees and a bunker to cross before you get to the green. A par chance certainly.

The dreaded 13th hole (there were two near fatal heart attacks last year in the same week!) may not quite strike fear, but it does have it’s pitfalls. A par 3 with a huge tree covering the left approach, heavy rough further left, and hedges on the right mean you do need to be straight to the very large green. Another 5 iron for this reviewer, but a par chance.

The second (and last) par 5 is hole no. 14. A slight dog leg to the left at 441 yards means 3 good hits to the green. A large fairway, ignoring the trees and rough on the left, gives you a nice second between tow rows of conifers to aim for. A fairway bunker and some bushes on the left further up may catch you out until you arrive on another two tier green. 6 is a good score for me.

The final Par 3 has an elevated tee box, with your shot crossing a small dip before it hits the green (hopefully). A bunker on the left can cause you to aim too much right into OB, but straight hitters again will be rewarded with a par.

The shortest par 4 is the 16th at just under 250 yards – perfectly reachable for long hitters. But for us high handicapped mortals, it’s a good chance for a par. Anything far left is in trouble, with lost balls a plenty, and conifers line the whole of the right hand side. So you need to be straight.

Hole no.17 is the only hole with water – a ditch crosses the end of the fairway. The conifers from the previous hole are on your right, with the left hand side being the fairway of the 11th – so not too much trouble there. The tricky part is your second shot over the ditch, which is certainly reachable after a good drive, but it plays on your mind, and I’ve seen many a 7 iron play short and drop in. A bunker on the right of the two tier green can also catch you out. I’m happy with a 5 here.

The final hole is the hardest hole on the course in my opinion. At 325 yards it isn’t long, but to clear the dog leg of this Par 4 you need to be hitting over 240 yards. Anything shorter and you’ll have trees to traverse to get to the green in regulation. But before that there’s the drive. Trees on either side of the fairway make this a stern test of nerve and trust in your driving ability. OB on the right (unless your in the trees) and trees on your left mean you have to be straight (again) unless you go really left, and then your on the 9th fairway ((actually, not too bad!). A sloping green, with a bunker to the left, and I’m happy with a 6!

So there you are. 3 hours, £12, and a nice walk. Enjoy!
