What the club says: Situated within 5 minutes walk from Berwick-upon-Tweed town centre, towards the North Sea coastline. With scenic views to Holy Island and northwards towards Scotland, "The Fields" is the most northerly Golf Course in England. Established in 1903 with the original layout designed by Willie Park the then Professional at Musselburgh.

Magdalene Fields Golf Club was chosen as a second course to play on holiday, having played Goswick earlier in the week. The course offers great value at £20 on the twilight rate, and offers a decent test with some challenging holes. The course opens with two short par fours; these are relatively easy holes and in my opinion probably the weakest on the course. I would say that the first could be improved greatly by the addition of some greenside bunkers. The third marks a change in the character as the course, the sea coming into view once more. The holes from here onwards are lined by thick grass, something which I feel greatly adds to the look and challenge of the course. The rest of the front nine is solid with some interesting holes. The pick of the holes on this front nine is the seventh, a short downhill dogleg placing a premium on positioning off the tee; approaching too far from the right makes it difficult to stop the ball quickly, as I found out first hand. There are multiple bunkers strategically located and I thought that the green complex on this hole was excellent. The short eighth appeared to be something of a signature hole with the tee shot played over a cove, but it did not come into play. I will add, however, that I thought this was another good green complex. The back nine is possibly slightly easier than the front, and again contains some good holes. The tenth incorporates both a dogleg and some elevation change, while I thought that the twelfth was a very scenic hole, but could be improved with some additional hazards for the tee shot. Fourteen was a challenging par three in the wind. The sixteenth could be considered another signature hole contender, with an intimidating tee shot and perhaps appropriately named 'Destroyer'. However, I can't help but think that the hole would be greatly improved with the addition of some bunkers, as I found the hole to be quite bland following the tee shot. The course ends with two good holes, a driveable par four with another nice green complex, and the pleasant closing par three with an interesting green. Course condition was very good and the greens, whilst not fast, were true and offered subtle breaks. The course offers some great views of the cliffs leading into Scotland as well as the pier in Berwick and Holy Island. Overall, this was a very enjoyable round and I wouldn't hesitate to play here again. Played the course in the afternoon and it was quiet. The bar offered good food and some good value.

Tough well presented course

Played this on 15th and 16th May, Course was in good condition but each day had its own separate challenges. On the 15th feed off behind a large outing and this spoiled the round. Had to stand and wait to play nearly every shot and sometimes waiting up to 10 minutes. Got to the stage where I just sat down and didn't tee off for 15 minutes so as to let them get away and also started to look for balls but ended up catching back up again. The round took 4 hours and 40 minutes and was spoiled by all of the time waiting. I don't blame the club for that, they have to take bookings like that to help balance the books, the fault lies with the 4 ball in front of me who never once even looked like waving me through.

On the 16th I arrived to find the visiting party had just left the 1st tee butnwith permission from the starter I was allowed to start at the 13th and play to 18th before coming back to the 1st, what a difference, despite looking for a lost ball on 3 occasions the round took 3 hrs 15 mins. The challenge on that day was the wind, very breezy with a northerly wind of about 20 mph. The course was great even with the extra challenge of the wind which made some long or uphill holes extra difficult. There are some really good holes here such as the downhill dogleg right 7th and the blind tee shot from the 16th aptly names the destroyer, give the course antry you won't be disappointed

Course itself was excellent. Just have to be wary of the footpaths through the course.

A fair course with open and fairly flat fairways, little in the way of obstacles and dangers and fair true greens. Just stay out of the rough and you should do fine, but if you go astray then best of luck! Even the short stuff just off the fairway can swallow a ball whole and make it disappear before your eyes. Get into the deeper stuff and it's like hacking through the jungle in there. There's more scenic courses out there but this is good enough value and they do a good breakfast too!

Great little course, not too taxing but several nice tricky holes where good drives are required, tough 14th par 3 was fun, clubhouse was really down to earth, great simple home cooked food and brilliant value

Played this course on Friday and thought it was great value for the price.
The Destroyer makes the course and I would recommend anyone to come here and play the course.
The staff in the bar were very helpful and the food was great and to drown that down the pints are a decent price too.

A well kept course with some beautiful coastal views. Greens were a bit slow. The Rough was very punishing. Quite a few lost balls.
