Heworth (Gateshead) Golf Club
The course is situated approximately 8 miles from the coast and 5 miles from Newcastle and is readily accessible by many main roads. Although some perceive this a ‘flat’ and therefore ‘easy’ course, it will offer golfers of all abilities the opportunity to test their skills especially with the introduction of many tree lined fairways. The course is set out in inland style. Apart from the many thousands of rapidly growing trees, the course has benefited from a number of subtle changes made in conjunction with our course architect ensuring that the course maintains a standard scratch of 71 (6421 yards). The wildlife on the course is thriving with the care to ensure that there are a number of natural habitats.
The front nine holes are considered to be slightly easier although throughout the first 6 holes you need to ensure that you keep your ‘slice to a minimum’. After negotiating these holes, you may feel that you can somewhat ‘loosen up’ however beware as many copses are now in play and tee shots need careful consideration.
All holes have been ‘named’ by our former President – Mr D Cassidy but many now have lost the distinctive features of their names especially the fifth hole where golfers could ‘line up’ their tee shots with the Chimneys at Hebburn Coke Works, sadly they no longer offer the golfer this advantage having been demolished. Course is rather flat with no natural water hazards, quite breezy on the back nine, but overall very good. As a beginner I find it a good course to learn on. Reasonably wide fairways and forgiving rough.

Course not in good condition - greens spongy probably due to the recent heavy weather. Bunkers appear to have no sand and was like clay in the 2 I visited. Fairways not in good condition at all. Clubhouse is very good. Group in front of me had two players, one set of clubs, and one was wearing jeans and trainers. No standards apparently at this course !!!!!
