Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester - Five Lakes Reviews & Information

133 ratings from Golfshake members

What the club says: Five Lakes Resort hosts two contrasting and mature 18 hole parkland courses which have gained an enviable reputation in this part of the world.

Lakes Course (Five Lakes Hotel, Golf & Spa) - This course, designed by Neil Coles, is used annually for regional PGA events and was the venue for the Nick Faldo Challenge. The course provides a testing examination for the better player as well as an enjoyable round for all standards. Water features strongly in the overall design of the Lakes Course, coming in to play on ten of the holes.

Links (Five Lakes Hotel, Golf & Spa) The Links course is renowned for its sweeping fairways and plush greens. With its strategically placed water hazards, sand bunkers and well guarded greens it proves an excellent challenge. Kept in superb condition all year round, the Links is slightly easier than the Lakes but a very enjoyable round nevertheless.

18 holes. Par 71. 6181 yards. Parkland.

The front nine were still showing the effects of a very wet winter although the greens were very good. the coarse from the yellows was very short at this time even shorter than the reds! I am sure the fairways will improve by the day as the weather is now coming milder and some good growth is all that is required. the bunkers were good and had obviously been improved since previous reviews. The coarse is well set out with 1st 9th and 18th all by the hotel.

Nice course with some challenging holes. However it suffered from sodden fairways and poor drainage. The quality of the greens were firm and receptive and free from surface water.

The facilties are impressive but lack a bit of soul being a 'resort' and the drinks in the bar are really expensive!

SLOW - Very SLOW - Very very SLOW. Too many societies on the course. 5 hours to get round! And we should have been on the Lakes but a screw up by onlineteetimes.co.uk meant there was no booking for us. Five Lakes were fantastic and let us play for free however it was still very frustrating!

No sand in bunkers. Grass too long on fairways, and weeds on green. General air of neglect.

I think I only saw 1 bunker with sand in it, the rest were empty and compact. However, apart from this, I really like the course. I've not played a course with narrow fairways before and it is a completely new challenge which I found quite enjoyable. The rough was also quite punishing, so you have to be really accurate off the tee.

Lovely course (Lakes) Much tougher than the links I hear.
Tight fairways and thick rough could make this a little less enjoyable for the Higher handicapped golfer.

Can't fault the condition of the course in regards to the fairways and greens. The bunkers however do need more sand in them!
If Your playing for the first time there are parts of the back 9 where it's not signposted that great, a bit of guess work needed.

Practicing facilities are spot on. Nice grass range and 2 putting greens.

The only real down side if the cost of a drink after, I ordered a pint of Coke........£3.90. Don't need to say much more,

I'd like to go back at some points, the place is amazing with all the other facilities it has there, but I'd take my own drink next time, ;-)

Very Good Course, Excellent facilities, although the rough was extremely unforgiving, especially for high handicap players

Links course very poor, glad I only paid £12 for a twigh light. Bunkers overgrown (jungles) cut grass left on course, rubble in one bunker. Lovely weather today but even after weeks of rain greens were rock hard. Give it a miss!
