Donnington Valley Golf Club
Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa, in Newbury, had its beautiful 18 hole parkland golf course re-designed and lengthened between 1998 and 2000 and is now a challenging 6,353 yards, par 71 course from the back tees. Although some of the holes are quite forgiving the closing four holes are regarded as one of the toughest finishes in the country, with water featuring prominently on 15th, 16th and 17th holes. The clubhouse, Snelsmore House, a Grade II listed Victorian building overlooks the 9th/18th green and offers golfers exceptional golfing and social facilities with its two bars. Contact Information

Interesting course, built into the hillside which means you have to think your way around the course. Tight in parts (too tight with overhanging branches) and not one for the longer hitters. Used the 5 wood quite a bit to good advantage. Course in good nick and the deal with hotel, dinner and use of spa/pool was a good one for £99

Weekend booked with a round each day but the extremely slow play on Sunday (2hrs 50mins for the front 9) made me give up after 9.
Saturday was much quicker but that was because of fair groups in front who would wave through. Despite heavy rain the preceding days, fairways were in good conditions and greens held (when I hit them). Back 9 is quite hilly compared to the front but some challenging holes 15 (Big Dipper) and 16 (Lakeside) quite unique challenges.
I played just better than my handicap which was quite pleasing for my first visit, hopefully will return to the course and the Vineyard restaurant nearby. The Course

Tough greens that do not reward good approaches, very quick and easy to putt back off the green even with the lightest of touches. However, on our third day pins were more central and putting was better rewarded. Long rounds for no apparent reason but a good course, worth a bash if you link it with a break at the hotel while the misses is in the spa!

Booked as a package with 2 rounds, dinner, room & breakfast for £120 so great value. However, like the other reviewer it was a long round - approx 5 hours. Lots of walking between tees in places and very undulating. The greens are the hardest I've ever played - very quick and unforgiving (nearly all sloped). Some very tight fairways. Lots of variety I thought though. Would defintely return.

Unrespective greens and a round of golf that took nearly 5.5 hours lead to a tiring and tedious round of golf. 18 holes crammed into the space for 9 lead to golfers playing from adjacent fairways and too up down for my liking with little on or no variety for serveral holes in sucession. Not for me thanks!

I turned up without a booking at 5:00pm on a Monday evening and was able to get out on the course straight away after being charged just £14 for 18 holes. The pro shop is very well stocked and the pro I dealt with was extremely helpful and friendly. Armed with a strokesaver, I headed out onto the course to play blind.
Whilst the middle of the front 9 (3 though 6) is a little up and down, most of the rest of the course has well shaped, tight holes. Accuracy off the tee is important and the holes seem to get tighter and tighter as you go around until you reach the 12th and you wonder how on earth you will ever hit the narrow strip of fairway. Missing the fairways is unlikely to result in a lost ball, but will leave you needing to thread your ball out of the trees that line both sides.
The front 9 is fairly flat and a good tee shot pays dividends as being the wrong side of the fairway will leave either a difficult or impossible shot to the green. Pick of the holes on the front 9 is the par 3 9th. A short 100 yards over water straight at the clubhouse with no room to go over the back of the green. The par 4 6th is also a cracker, which has a tight shot from the tee blind over the brow of a hill. You are then faced with a downhill shot to wide but short green which is protected across 3/4 of the approach by water.
The back 9 is much more undulating, culmanating in the par 5 15th, aptly named the big dipper as it rises and falls significantly three times on the way to the green. You then have the great par 3 16th, which is a tough uphill hole over water. As it says in the strokesaver, club up and if you miss the green, you won't score. The 18th is a good finishing hole, a shortish par 4 with a slight dogleg right. The green is right next to the 9th green and is so close it's virtually a twin green.
The greens are reasonably quick and run true. There isn't a flat green on the course though, so putting the ball close or at least in the right position is crucial to avoid a nasty break whoich would result in a three putt. Some of the breaks are quite subtle or leave you wondering why it moved that way so be prepared!
This is a shortish course but the rolling nature of the back 9 means that fatigue can start to set in towards the end of the round. I quite enjoyed the round and think that knowing the course would be of benefit and local knowledge would assist in getting better scores. I only played this course as it's better known neighbour, Donnington Grove, was closed in preparation for a pro-am tournament. I will more than likely be going back. The Course

I've played this course a number of times and although it isn't the most testing it was in great condition this time. The fairways were really well-cut and the greens superb. A very enjoyable round!

I enjoy playing this course, however the greens are extremely unforgiving in the summer. A very tight course that requires consistant driving, which when pulled off you will only need a short iron/wedge into the green. My favourite hole was the Par 3 9th that is overlooked by the old but spectacular clubhouse. The pro shop is very friendly towards its costumers and is stocked well. The Clubhouse/Bar is well equiped but feels small and restricted. Overall an enjoyable course which it has a lot of potential to be Great!!

Not a great course with too many up and down holes. Greens have never been very good here and the bunkers are usually full of water over the winter. Its also quite expensive for the quality of the course. However there a few very nice holes including the short par 3 9th and the challenging par 5 15th. The Clubhouse is very picturesque with an oak panelled lounge and the pro shop is well stocked and friendly.
