Why You Should Play Golf at St Pierre

By: Liam Moore | Thu 31 Mar 2022

When you think of golf in south Wales, Celtic Manor would rightfully be at the forefront of your mind.

Whilst that remains a classy venue - that’s also hosted the Ryder Cup - it does not represent the full extent of golfing facilities in the region.

St Pierre Marriott Hotel & Country Club is located in Chepstow and it is set in 400 acres of awe-inspiring Monmouthshire countryside.

Did you know that St Pierre has also hosted the Solheim Cup? This should demonstrate how enthusiastic the country is about the sport.

The 14th century manor house, which has been converted into the home of St Pierre Resort, is truly delightful.

For any golfers who are situated in the west country, you’ll be thrilled to know that this complex is only 12 miles away from Bristol.

St Pierre

Golf

There are two golf courses that are attached to the premises - Old and Mathern Course - which helps to spread the influx of visitors across 36 holes.

The Old Course is the championship layout and it has hosted many international competitions, including the Solheim Cup.

Measuring a demanding 7,028 yards and boasting a par of 72, iconic figures such as Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros have championed this route previously.

Having been readjusted in 2008, the drainage and other notable features have been drastically augmented as a result.

For anyone who had played the original routing, the new design brings a fresh experience - which makes this the number one course at St Pierre.

The signature hole holds special importance to anyone who visits, as the 235-yard par-3 requires a lengthy carry over water to a raised green.

You’ll be asked to carry the majority of the distance, as anything short will be flirting with the water hazard that lurks below.

The Old Course may be the preferred loop of the two but the Mathern offers a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf.

With a distance of 5,730 yards, it is significantly shorter than the Old, but this fantastic parkland design relies on more than gruelling length.

It too received remodelling in 2007 to help improve its design and condition, which the team successfully accomplished.

Tremendous views of the Welsh countryside supplement the round but it’s very important you stay dialled with your game, as the stunning scenery can be quite the distraction at times.

Whilst higher-handicap golfers may struggle on the Old, they will flourish on the Mathern, where shot-making capabilities are still tested to the extreme.

The Mathern is the perfect course for a quick round before departing the hotel or it can even act as a warm-up route before you tackle the more demanding Old Course.

With both layouts being viable, you should start to understand why golf at St Pierre is thought of so highly - just ask the Solheim Cup teams!

Accommodation

St Pierre Bedroom

One of the standout aspects of St Pierre - away from the delightful Old Course, of course - is the stunning setting of the wonderful parkland grounds.

There are 132 guestrooms available and the Manor House provides a unique short-term home.

The majority of rooms feature picture-perfect views of the hotel courtyard, lake or one of the golf courses.

Featuring one double bed and residing in the Main Building, Courtyard or Lakeside Village, the Deluxe Room is ideal for couples.

Alternatively, you may be travelling with a friend and bed-sharing may not interest you and if that’s the case, the Twin Room would be ideal - which includes all the same features but swapping the double bed for two singles.

Superior Rooms are larger in size but the maximum occupancy remains at two. They also boast outstanding and picturesque views of the expansive lake.

For the summer period, the Balcony Superior Room is always a popular choice, enabling you to enjoy breakfast from the comfort of your very own room that lies beside the lake.

Located in the Lakeside Village are the 1 Bedroom Junior Suites, that boast a maximum occupancy of four.

They feature one king-size bed, a sofa bed and offer more space for storage and general living than the previous options.

Finally, the most premium choice at St Pierre is the 1 Bedroom Suite, which includes free parking, a courtyard view, one king-size bed and a sofa bed.

All rooms are equipped with at least a bathtub and hair dryer, whilst 24-hour room service, coffee maker and instant hot water are also available too.

Gastronomy

St Pierre Restaurant

Dining at St Pierre is always a treat and there are a variety of choices for you to trial during your stay at the Welsh venue.

The Cast Iron Bar & Grill is an informal setting that serves a wide range of meals with a real emphasis placed on steaks and other red meats.

Morgan’s Restaurant, on the other hand, is inspired by the Welsh cuisine and they have won awards due to their renowned cheese menu.

If you’re looking for a light meal and drink then the Trophy Bar should be at the top of your list, which overlooks the 18th hole on the iconic Old Course.

With so much choice and first-class hospitality wherever you go, the gastronomy options at St Pierre have something for everyone.

Spa & Leisure

The spa at St Pierre is an ideal place to recover after a round of golf, to help prepare you for your next outing.

They offer a range of treatments that include foot baths, massages, facial treatments and body scrubs - with steam rooms and therapy baths also available.

There are also plenty of external activities to experience, such as a fitness club to maintain your exercising schedule, in addition to tennis courts and other outdoor ventures.

South Wales is a fantastic place for golfers and St Pierre’s sublime services can rival those found across the road at Newport’s Celtic Manor.

The Old Course has hosted the Solheim Cup and other notable DP World Tour events, which tells you everything you need to know about the revered layout.

Boasting first-class hospitality, alongside stylish and comfortable rooms, a stay at St Pierre is far beyond the golf - it’s a trip to paradise.
