Remembering Victor Dubuisson's heroics at the WGC Match Play in 2014

The WGC Match Play has always been an intriguing event, bringing together the world's best in head-to-head competition, but it would be hard to better the excitement generated by Victor Dubuisson and his miraculous recoveries to keep the match alive against Jason Day in the 2014 final.

It was the championship's last year at Dove Mountain in Arizona, before a venue and format change, and the young Frenchman found himself in the showpiece with Australia's Jason Day, who was looking to secure his biggest victory to date. Dubuisson's brilliant run to the final had already clinched him a place in the European Ryder Cup team later that year at Gleneagles, but he wasn't going to give up to the Queenslander without a fight.

It all started on the final hole of the regulated 18, with Day in position to win the match. Dubuisson was in the greenside bunker, facing a difficult shot onto an undulating surface. It would require both imagination and skill, with the Frenchman displaying both of those qualities to extend the match with a successful up-and-down.

This would only be the start of the magic, however, as the 23-year-old found himself in an even more precarious spot on the 19th - namely a cactus bush - after playing his second shot through the green.

There is no way he can recover from that, surey? Jason Day must have been thinking the same at that point.

With the match extended, and those watching on even more stunned than before, Dubuisson conspired to put himself in yet another unenviable spot. This time, with roots and rocks in the way, the enigmatic Frenchman produced a miraculous shot to within eight-feet of the hole to keep the match alive.

At this point, all Jason Day - once again on the precipice of victory - could do was laugh in bemusement at what was unfolding before his eyes.

The magic ultimately came to an end, with the 26-year-old Australian finally securing the biggest win of his career (at that time) on the fifth additional hole. Dubuisson's heroics somewhat overshadowed that triumph, however, with those watching in person or on TV left stunned by what they had seen.
