North vs South 2011

By: Adam Smith | Tue 21 Jun 2011

For the second year running the North team were victorious in Golfshake’s version of the Ryder Cup.

The North vs. South event that is into its fifth year was once again held at the Abbey Hotel Golf Club, Redditch.

With 14 matches out on the course it was the North team who claimed a 9-5 over their Southern rivals and the fourth time in five years they have lifted the trophy.

The first two matches gave each side a point on the board early on.

North Captain Kevin Shearsby led by example along with partner Paul Hindmarsh as they beat Southern Captain Kevin Hewitt and last year’s defeated Captain Dave Ley 2 up.

The South hit back and in resounding fashion. A 6&4 victory for Andy Kenyon and Nikki Lewis over Chris Perry and Graham McClean tied the scores up.

It was then the North started to take charge and put one hand on the trophy early one as they won the next five matches taking the score to 6-1.

The parings over Russ Middleton and Robin Vidler along with Darren Millichip and Malcom Fell were the stand out ties, both winning 5&3.

The final nail in the coffin came as North’s Lorna Nichols and Michael Kinsella won their match 2&1 over Dean Dodman and Ray Perryman to make it an unattainable 8-3 score line.

“I am a very proud Captain” said Shearsby.

“I’d like to thanks all the organisers and the course which was in great condition but most of all my team for a great victory.”

The South won the last two games to bring the score back to a more respectable 9-5 but it was the North who was celebrating having retained the trophy.

The 2012 event is already being planned and the South will want to stop the North’s run of holding the trophy.
