10 Picks to Win The 2023 US Open

By: | Mon 12 Jun 2023

The 2023 US Open is being staged for the first time at Los Angeles Country Club, a venue that has long possessed significant mystique. England's Matt Fitzpatrick defends the title he won so dramatically last year, but a significant challenge is posed by the many leading contenders who are in top form.

Golfshake's Derek Clements has picked out ten names he's looking at this week.

Viktor Hovland

Hovland has rediscovered his very best form at exactly the right time, winning The Memorial at the brutally difficult Muirfield Village. He has a fabulous temperament and a happy knack of playing well on difficult golf courses.

Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler would dearly love to add the US Open to his CV. He has already won twice this season and seems to contend every time he plays. He is in peak form. Scheffler has many strengths but perhaps the greatest of them is his ability to shrug off bad breaks.

Jon Rahm

Enjoying the season of his life. He already has The Masters tucked away and is a former US Open champion. We are not halfway through the year yet and the Spaniard has already won four times. But his patience will be tested to the limit.

Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman led The Memorial after 54 holes but stumbled to a final round of 75. He would be the first to admit that he hasn’t played well this year but he still managed a top-10 finish at the US PGA. If he is to have any chance of winning he must sort out his driving.

Jordan Spieth

You can never write off a golfer who holes as many putts as Spieth does. He is a former US Open champion but it is now six years since his most recent major victory. However, he is striking the ball nicely again and is driving the ball well. Can never be ruled out.

Brooks Koepka

Won the US PGA Championship in superb style after finishing joint runner-up at The Masters in April. For the first time in two years, Koepka is fully fit and that means he is likely to contend once again. He is a two-time US Open champion.

Bryson DeChambeau

Hasn’t enjoyed a great time since joining LIV Golf, struggling with niggling injuries for the first time in his career. It has forced him to have a rethink about his body shape and he looked less muscle-bound at the US PGA Championship. Don’t be surprised to see him contend.

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay has every shot in the book and takes everything in his stride. Unfortunately, he is also one of the slowest, most deliberate golfers on the planet - but that could work in his favour as he bids to finally land his first major title.

Matt Fitzpatrick

The odds are heavily stacked against Fitzpatrick making a successful defence of his title but this is a tournament that requires patience, and Fitzpatrick possesses that in abundance. He also finds lots of fairways and holes an awful lot of putts.

Tommy Fleetwood

The Englishman enjoys a challenge, and the US Open certainly provides that. He has runner-up finishes to his name at both the US Open and The Open and knows how to go really well on the toughest golf courses. For Fleetwood it could be all about his putting.
