17th July 2010 - Charity Game in Aid of Cancer Research
I’m again running my charity day “Golf for Life” in 2010. With all profits going to Cancer Research UK, the event is taking place at Grassmoor Golf Centre near Junction 29 of the M1 in Derbyshire on Saturday July 17th 2010.
There are lots of prizes available on the day; see our game link for a full list: http://www.golfshake.com/golf/view/5796/
There will also be a putting competition and world-renowned trick shot expert Jeremy Dale will be attending to keep everyone entertained. See his web site http://www.jeremydale.com/ for an example of what he can do.
After the golf Jeremy will also be performing his golf trick shot show “It’s a Kind of Magic” on the range at Grassmoor from around 7.30. Families and friends of players are welcome to join us for a drink and I would like to extend an invitation to Golfshake members to come along in the evening and watch the show (entry is free) even if they can’t play on the day. Please feel free to pm me if you’d like to find out more.
Entry to the golf event is just £29.50 per player and includes a bacon roll, and coffee on arrival, entry to the putting competition, refreshments after 9 holes and a chance to win some of those great prizes! Please come and join us for what should be a really enjoyable day. Sign up now at http://www.golfshake.com/golf/view/5796/

Good luck with the day mate, hope you raise lots for Cancer Research UK

Hi Phil.
Yes, I got your email, thanks. The list on Golfshake is purely the people that have signed up through the site. We presently have 54 players registered for the game at the moment but still have room for more. Rest assured that Dean's name is on the list and I'll be in touch a bit nearer the day.
Looking forward to seeing you again.
James.

Hi James, are you still looking for more sponsors cos i may be able to get a couple of companies interested in such a good cause.
Cheers Stu

Just watched the Jeremy Dale clips on YouTube, its going to be a great day, i just need some pink balls :-)
Reply : Tue 4th May 2010 13:26
You're right John, he should be very entertaining.
Stuart, that's very knd of you, thanks. I still have room for a few more hole sponsors at £25 a hole. All the par 3s have gone (we've got 5 nearest the pins now!), we just have a few par 4s and one par 5 left. Thank you for sponsoring the longest drive hole through your company, can't think why you were interested in that particular competition!
Reply : Tue 4th May 2010 16:56
Cheers Ged, i was wondering when you were going to wake up from your night out. I won't be entering the longest drive comp Wayne as you rightly say it would be unfair so i will be taking a 7 iron off the tee. Still i might have a chance so better make it an 8 iron.

Looking forward to seeing him, he looks good
Reply : Wed 5th May 2010 00:18
He's also going to be around during the day Richard to do some on course "entertaining".
Reply : Wed 5th May 2010 09:46
Course entertaining or coarse entertaining - is he the new "Chubby Brown"?
Seriously, his tricks look amazing. What I want to know is "how does he get those really long drivers into his car? He must have some sort of stretch limo!!!
Reply : Wed 5th May 2010 11:37
My spelling is correct Mr Martin, as you jolly well know!
I'm guessing the club might come in 2 pieces and screw together. I'll find out for you.
Reply : Wed 5th May 2010 18:12
MY golf can be entertaining enough without a show off making me look worse
Reply : Wed 5th May 2010 22:55
Gutted! I've spoken to Jeremy tonight and apparently his extended driver is no more. The head smasshed and so it's gone to the big golf club graveyard in the sky!
Snce then he tells me he's been working on more tricks with "normal" clubs so it will be interesting to see what he's come up with on July 17th.
Reply : Wed 5th May 2010 23:18
That's a shame Wayne, you know you'd have been made most welcome.
Ged is coming across from the North West with another 7 members of the Halewood society and we've got people coming up from the South and down from North Yorkshire and Northumberland too. Hopefully it will be a day to remember and raise a nice bit for cancer research as well.
Reply : Fri 7th May 2010 09:41
Keep up the good work James, i'm just hoping i can get the day off work to play.
Reply : Fri 7th May 2010 20:14
Hope you can too Nigel, not seen you for a while.
Reply : Fri 7th May 2010 22:30
It's on the kitchen calendar James so I'll be there!
Wouldn't mind a practice game round there as I've never played it before (despite it being fairly local) if you fancy it one weekend?
Reply : Fri 7th May 2010 23:06
No probs Chris, a couple of people have said that. I'll try and sort something out for last week june/first week July as I'm pretty booked up until then.
I'll get back to you mate.
Reply : Sun 9th May 2010 08:58
Yeah, i'm up for a practise game there too James...
Reply : Sun 9th May 2010 21:49
I'm up for that as well James, have played there but it's a fair few years ago.
Reply : Mon 10th May 2010 06:20
me and nigel played it the other week the fairways and greens were in great nick
Reply : Mon 10th May 2010 09:39
We've already got a trick shot specialist Al, do we need another one?
Reply : Mon 10th May 2010 20:56
Yes, as Allan says, the CGL society have been raising money since last Autumn for Cancer Research UK We've been raising money through putting competitions at our society events and held one on the 18th green at The Abbey just before the North v South. We have also been collecting people's saleable items and donating them to Cancer Research UK shops, for which we receive a credit for the charity effort.
We started off with the aim of raising £3000 and soon, after the generosity of our members, realised we were going to achieve this easily so we upped it to £5000.
After last weekend's society event, the amount raised currently stands at £4440.32 which, for a bunch of golfers who come together every now and again for a game, I don't think is too bad an effort.
We have an online donation page at http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/golf if anyone would like to donate online and our golf day on 17th July will add to the proceeds. I have revised our target and am now aiming to raise £10,000 by the end of August 2010.
Please, if you're available on July 17th, come and join us for what should be a great day of golf and entertainment. There are lots of prizes on offer and all profits willl go to Cancer Research UK to help in the fight against this terrible disease. For more information seee our dedicated web site http://www.golfforlife.co.uk/

Thanks Wayne. It's been a real team effort so far and everyone has contributed.
You don't think Darren and Malcolm would have worn those trousers at the North v South if it wasn't for charity do you?

James, what time does this day start, and what is the first tee time
Rich
Reply : Wed 12th May 2010 20:08
High noon Richard, first tee time 12.00, with the last group expected to go off between 2 and 2.30.
At approxamately 7.15 we will present the day's prizes and then settle down to enjoy the Jeremy Dale trick shot show at around 7.30.
We have use of the club's function room, which is right next to where the show will take place and the bar will be open all evening.

To anyone that's interested in this i game i would recommend putting yourself down to play it. Its a cracking course, fantastic greens but you can score on the course and the par 3's are really good.
£30 for a round, plus prizes and entertainment all for Cancer Research, great value....

Couldn't agree with you more John!
At the moment we've got about 60 players turning up to support this worthy cause. If anyone else would like to come and support what should be a good day, please register or let me know. As john said, golf prizes and evening entertainment all for under £30.

James, my wife and her sister are thinking of coming to join us for the evening as my brother in law is a keen golfer and would enjoy the trick shot display. Will they be able to get a drink and some food after the game
Reply : Wed 26th May 2010 06:46
Hi Richard,
Yes they will. I think it would be really nice if we can get lots of family and friends up for the evening show, everybody is welcome.
If any golfshakers fancy coming to the trick shot show they'd be most welcome, even if not playing on the day. Entry is free and there will be a raffle with some great prizes. PM me if you'd like more details.

how many holes are still available for sponsership James?
Reply : Mon 14th Jun 2010 19:23
Hi Stu.
We currently have 12 holes sponsored meaning there are 6 holes left @ £25 each. For that, sponsors get an advert on this page http://www.golfforlife.co.uk/sponsors.htm an advert in our programme for the day and their logo or other image on the tee box of the hole they've sponsored.
If any one else fancies taking one of the six remaining holes, please let me know. It's a great advert with over 65 golfers attending and you'll be helping to raise money for Cancer Research UK too.

Hi all,
I have sent PMs out to Golfshakers registered for this game requesting a £10 deposit to be paid by July 7th to confirm your place and i'm pleased to say I've had a few paid already.
If you intend playing in this game, please pay the required £10 by July 7th. If you are down as "Interested" please either confirm or withdraw your entry.
Hopefully we should have between 80 and 100 players out on the day, I've booked sunshine so it should be a good day and hopefully raise plenty of money for Cancer Research UK.
There is still space for anyone else that fancies joining us on the day. Please get in touch if you'd like to join us.

Just under a week now until the deadline for deposits for this game. Thanks to the Golfshakers who've contacted me to either pay, or let me know payment is on the way.
There are 9 people currently, who were confirmed, but whose status I've set to "waiting list" beacuase I haven't heard from them. I will change their status to "confirmed" when I do.
Another 8 people have the status "I'm Interested", so could these players either confirm or delete themselves from the game (I can feel Wayne getting ready to type a response to this!)
Can the 17 players mentioned above PLEASE do one of the above in the next few days. You have also all received a PM. Anyone who has organised games knows how awkward it is to confirm final numbers and how much hassle it causes when a number of players have committed to take part but have then made no contact.
For those that have confirmed, I will be sending out final details next weekend.
Thanks.

I will be sorting out the tee times this week. The first one will be 12.00. If anyone has any preference, of either time or partner, please let me know.
Obviously I will pair those that are bringing friends along together (unless you'd prefer me not to of course!)

Played Grassmoor for the first this evening with Neil Beech and Stu Laws (only Neil had played it before). It's a nice little layout once you get past some of the unsightly "rubble" areas. The back 9 certainly the better of the two but with interesting holes on both sides. The Par 3's were particularlarly nice. The course itself when you stay in the short stuff is well kept and the greens were excellent - but very difficult. I dont think one of us had a straight putt over 3 feet. The surfaces were very very fast and rolled very well - miss the putt and you could easily go 4 or 5 feet by when it looked like rolling dead weight! I fancy a fairly high score could win next week as we all scored 36pts+ (off the yellows) and several 'shakers have been shooting low round there. It will make for a good days golf as the course is playable by all standards - but of course the real winner will be the charity. See you all next week
-- I gather there are several spare places still going so if you are thinking of coming to support the effort then James is still looking for a few more players.
Reply : Fri 9th Jul 2010 11:00
I think your assessment is spot on Chris. The worst part of the whole course is the view you get when you come down the drive; you come round a corner and see a huge mound of rubble! Once you get past that though it's a lovely little course. GUR comes into play on a few holes as a couple of the banks are still maturing but, other than that, it's a really nice course.
74 people have signed up to play so far so, weather permitting, I'm hoping for a great day!
As Chris says, there's still time if anyone else fancies joining us. I am closing the game to new entrants at the weekend.

Entry for this event will close on Sunday evening.
Anyone at a loose end next saturday and fancy a great day out - a round of golf followed by the Jeremy Dale show? If you do, send me a message asap!

Tee tims for next Saturday published on the game page: http://www.golfshake.com/golf/view/5796/
All participants should also have a PM from me with further details and joining instructions.
Any problems, please let me know.
James.
Reply : Mon 12th Jul 2010 06:16
Yes Wayne, I'm happy with that.
Unfortunately the same old problems with the "I'm Interested" list. 8 people down as this who have had to be removed as they haven't reponded to messages. It's particularly annoying as I can see from my outbox that a number of them have read their PMs but haven't bothered letting me know whether they're playing or not.
Still, such is life!
Reply : Sun 18th Jul 2010 20:53
Well, what can i say?
A great effort from the 81 people that took part and lots of others means that the actual amount raise on the day for Cancer Research UK is
£2,211.47
Thanks everyone!
(I'll do a full write-up of the day's events when I get time).

Well done to all involved - especially James and his family.
Thanks Tim, John and Lorna for "putting up" with me for the day (it's not usually that bad....honest.....well maybe once in a while!). I think we may have taken home the team wooden spoon if there had been such a prize....maybe an idea for next year James?
Reply : Sun 18th Jul 2010 23:41
Chris, I thought you struck the ball nice and solid, as did Tim and Lorna, isn't she great off the tee.
I have never seen a ball hit so high in my life, how you manage to work out the distances for each club really amazes me.
The greens definitely beat us all.
Reply : Mon 19th Jul 2010 00:04
Yes Lorna hits a good drive - I was equally impressed with some of her gentle approach shots.
Oddly I've been trying to keep the ball down more this year after having a lesson a while back. I'm not sure why I hit it so high - it's certainly not intentional - answers on a postcard
