Course review : Grange Park (St Helens) Golf Club

First impression was that the first tee looked stunning. Very long and extremely wide. Right in front of the clubhouse. Tried out the practise green and was pleasantly impressed.
Awaited my playing partners to arrive and then we went into the clubhouse and had coffees. Spoke to the pro in the shop, got my chipper regripped and headed for the first.
My playing partners played well but on many holes, I think they would agree, could and should have played better. I think they both would when they go back.
The Tee's were excellent, no slopes to write about and had consistent quality on them all.
The fairways were nicely cut but the rough was rough. We were warned about this before hand. Luckily I had printed off a strokesaver from the internet, which had some useful tips from the pro for where to aim your shots. Handy especially as they didn't sell any in the shop.
The greens were rather impressive. A lot of them had slopes, which made them challenging. The speeds varied but the conditions of them were extremely good.
The only down side was the state of the bunkers. Lumpy sand and not much of it. But that's what bunkers are for really, so can't complain. I found a couple and got out of them.
My golf was not good enough for this course. My playing partners had some very good results. Wayne especially hit some very straight drives, which aided his better round score. Mark hit some very long drives that at times, were impressive to watch.
I plodded around and didn't put much good golf together. On one par 5, I did but couldn't keep it going.
Over all, it was nice to watch some good shots played by the two of them. I feel they may well have marked a better card if I hadn't been with them.
Thanx though Mark & Wayne for an enjoyable round.
Was it worth £30? Yes
Would I play it again? Yes

Course review : Leamington and County Golf Club

I agree with the previous review, that this course is a friendly members club. The gentleman behind the counter in the pro shop is a very nice man. He was extremely helpful.
We had a breakfast to start with and this was very good.
We walked the course and the weather was very hot.
The tees again, were a let down, too much sloping not enough flat ones.
The fairways were in very good condition but the greens were a significant let down. The main reason for this was that there seems to be many different types of grass in the greens, so the ball never ran true. The greens were big but if they don't run true, then you have wasted your round. I normally average about 1 and half rounds a hole, I think my putting on these greens probably justified half of my rounds score.
Therefore, I need to ask myself the same questions I asked about Ingon Manor:
Overall, was this course worth a price tag of £40?....No!
Did the course live up to its recommended reputation? .....No
Would I play there again?.....No

To me, it is a course that has a good standing from the time you drive in, to the time you stand on the 1st green. Unfortunately, after that, you start to feel let down. The greens and tees are the start of every round and they both need to be a lot better. The course itself, is a very pretty but with a puzzling layout. There needs to be much better signage from each hole to the next. It just looks like the course has had a change of heart with the order of the holes. You are sure the next hole is beside you but you then have to walk quite a way to.
In conclusion, If you want to play a pleasant course, this is for you. If you want to play a frustrating course that will help your handicap go higher, then this course is for you.
Sorry but this is mine and my playing partners conclusion on what should have been a much better managed course.

Course review : Ingon Manor Golf Club

Arrived early enough to get a 'Golfers Breakfast', which wasn't brilliant but we didn't have to wait long.
The pro's assistant William, was a most pleasant chap. He was friendly, helpful and above all went out of his way to accomodate us. For him, we wanted the course to stand up and be counted as a worthy play for £40 at the weekend.
We hired a buggy, as are legs were a little hampered from yesterdays game and we had 120 odd miles to drive back afterwards.
Standing on the 1st is very nice because it is slightly away from the clubhouse, always easier if you know no one is not watching you.
The course itself was in superb condition.
The greens, if at times somewhat frustrating, ran true mostly. They were beautifully spongy but rather on the small side.
The fairways were tight but fair, with a lot of trees on the course to help bring the ball back onto the fairway, or hide them for ever.
The only let down, was the condition of the Tees. Not to worry though, because the majority of clubs out there do the same, do not pay enough attention to the quality of the tees. Flatten the tees out please, make sure they do not slope from or towards you.
Overall, was this course worth a price tag of £40?....Yes!
Did the course live up to its recommended reputation? .....Yes
Would I play there again?.....I would become a member if I lived within 50 miles! Trouble is, I live 128 miles away.
I would strongly recommend that if you have the chance to play this course, jump at it. It also has an hotel attached to it, so for any of those golfing societies out there that fancy a real treat. Get together and play a weekend of golf here, you will love it.
Lastly, once again I would like to thank William (pro's assistant) and Richard (pro) for the hospitality they showed us. You have both helped create a wonderful atmosphere, that aids the pleasantness of this course. I look forward to returning, as soon as I can.

Course review : Brookdale Golf Club

I played here over the 07 Christmas Holiday. Considering how wet it had been, oh and the fact I had to carry a place mat to hit every shot off, the course was excellent. I can't wait for the warm weather to play the course. May even look at joining the club.
