Westwood in good health

With the Ryder Cup fast approaching, and Colin Montgomerie already having named his wildcard picks for the European team, the hopes of Team Europe may well rest in the hands of the medical team, who are working full time to get European number one Lee Westwood back to full health.

With the most recent reports suggesting that Lee Westwood is meeting the targets required to be back in time to take up his place in the European team at the Ryder Cup, European hopes have received a major boost.

Having secured his place on the team before getting injured, Westwood is likely to be coming into the Ryder Cup as something of an unknown quantity. Although he is clearly an exceptional golfer, and someone who will be carrying the hopes of the European fans who travel to Celtic Manor on his shoulders, Westwood will need to regain his form quickly if he is to achieve individual triumphs capable of adequately supporting the European team's cause.

In spite of the European team being heavily favoured by Ryder Cup favourite odds to win , the failure of Westwood to regain full fitness would be a major blow to the chances of the Europeans reclaiming the trophy that they lost to the Americans back in 2008.

However, whilst it would indeed be a major blow, it is unlikely to be a fatal one. With the likes of Justin Rose and Paul Casey waiting in the wings, desperate for a call up from Monty, and with US team captain Corey Pavin having to motivate a team that may be devoid of the support of world number one Tiger Woods, the chances of the European side regaining the Ryder Cup – with or without Lee Westwood – remain strong according to the latest golf odds .
