Harrington targets Ryder Cup place

Padraig Harrington has admitted that he would be devastated if he fails to make the European Ryder Cup team to face the USA later this year.

Online betting pundits note that there are only five weeks left in the point race and Harrington believes he is in a "very perilous position" as he sits in 17th place.

The leading 9 players are automatically selected to compete, leaving captain Colin Montgomerie to make three wild card selections.

Speaking about the last few months, the three-time major winner said:” I've had more top 10s in the last year than I've ever had in my career so my form has been solid.”

"Going on a guideline that most people use I've actually had my best year."

This might not be enough to secure a place in the European team or be involved in Ryder Cup betting though. If Harrington fails to make the top 9 in the points table, there are no guarantees that he will be a wild card selection.

Paul Casey, Edoardo Molinari, Justin Rose, Harrington and Henrik Stenson are all in a similar position to the Irishman and would require a wild card entry as things stand.

Montgomerie has stated that he would prefer it if his star players could qualify for the tournament automatically, so he didn’t have to waste a wild card on their presence.

Harrington will just have to do all he can to get enough points in the next few weeks to secure a spot. Good form would help Montgomerie in his decision to select him too, so it is essential that he plays well in the next month or so.
