ClubstoHire - Offering a solution to the golf club travel cost

By: Adam Smith | Mon 14 Jul 2014

Quite a few years ago we featured ClubstoHire.com on Golfshake when they first launched in 2010 promising to put pay to airlines being able to charge through the nose to take golf clubs on board flights. On a recent trip to Spain we finally got the chance to test their service and we are gutted it’s taken us this long as it was brilliant!

Having booked just a two hour flight down to Reus, Costa Dorada on Spain’s southern coast Ryanair wanted to charge me an extra £100 to take my own clubs along. After a tweet conversation with the airline there was no budging on this price, which is when ClubstoHire came in and offered their services with aplomb.

For our trip we were given a choice of what clubs we wanted, three choices of where to pick them up; at the airport on our arrival, have them delivered to our hotel or arrange for a time for them to be delivered at the golf club we were playing at. There was also options on where and what time we wanted to drop them off as well.

First Class Service

The service was impeccable, an employee was there waiting for us in the arrivals halls as we walked out and after a quick check of the clubs and a sign over they were ours for the week.

The clubs themselves were of good quality, a few scuff marks here and there but still in very good condition and the fact that from start to finish; the booking, the arranging of where to pick-up and then picking them up was all hassle and stress free I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again on our next trip, in fact we’ve already spoken about it.

The cost for seven day hire is 35 Euros which includes 13 clubs (lob wedge is an optional extra) and then ten Euros per day for a longer booking. Golf shoes are also available at ten Euros for the week.

The brainchild of Director Tony Judge and principal investor Gerry Mckiernan ClubstoHire also brought on board another investor, European Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley. Judge and McGinley are friends from their college days in San Diego, US and it’s McGinley’s influence in the game which has helped the company negotiate discounts on sets from TaylorMade and Callaway in exchange for the shop window promotion offered by the rental trial experience of thousands of travelling golfers in airports around the world.

Since the first outlet store was opened in Faro, Portugal, where three in four tourists play golf, ClubstoHire now has 21 destinations on its books from the most popular golfing destinations around Europe to as far as Cape Town in South Africa. This is estimated to have helped 125,000 travelling golfers save over four million Euros in excess luggage charges.

Last year ClubstoHire doubled its revenue and supplied over 40,000 sets of clubs to golfers. This also helped the company win the Vodafone Start-up award for ‘Best Service’, heading a list of 400 companies that were considered by leading entrepreneurs and business owners. Add that prize to the inaugural ‘HSBC Golf Business Community Award for Innovation’ at The HSBC Golf Business Forum in Abu Dhabi and ClubstoHire is just going to continue to grow.

If you’re in the process of booking your golfing break abroad I would seriously consider leaving your clubs and stress behind and making a booking with ClubstoHire.
