Worcestershire and Herefordshire CGP Host Junior Golf Conference

Golf clubs across Worcestershire are to be given a helping hand to support the drive to encourage more young people into the sport.

The Worcestershire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership has teamed up with the Golf Foundation to host a Junior Golf Conference next month.

The event – which is open to all clubs in the county – will provide valuable information and advice on how to create a welcoming environment for young people to enjoy their golf.

The conference takes place at Kings Norton Golf Club on February 12 (5.30pm) and it is hoped that both golf professionals and the volunteer junior organisers will attend.

Says Alan Beard, development officer for the CGP: “This is an ideal opportunity for those involved in junior golf to further develop their club’s own section as well as being offered a clear understanding of the support that is available in developing young golfers along a pathway that could take them from grass roots beginner to potential county player of the future.

“The aim should be to give every child the chance to progress as far as their skill and enthusiasm will take them.

“The conference is also a chance to update clubs on the latest ideas and initiatives to encourage young people into the sport and about how golf clubs can go out into their local community and work with partners such as schools, youth clubs and other associations. The conference will also include details of potential funding for clubs as they develop their junior sections.”

Adds Alan: “By taking the time to develop a proactive and positive approach to junior golf, a club is also taking steps towards protecting its own long-term future.”

Alan Beard will be joined at the conference by Jason Sorrell, from the Golf Foundation.

Get into golf is a national campaign to inspire new golfers run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of County Golf Partnerships, which work to grow the game.

Get into golf opportunities include free or low-cost beginner courses with PGA professionals. They are a fun and sociable way to start golf – and a great way to make new friends.   Discounted lessons can cost as little as £25 for a five-week course.
