Worcestershire and Herefordshire CGP Offering Golf with a Difference

By: Golf Shake | Mon 06 Jan 2014

worcestershire partnershipStudents in Worcestershire are trying course work with a difference.

The region's county golf partnership is working with the Worcester Technology College to deliver free taster sessions.

Alan Beard, the development officer for the Worcestershire and Herefordshire CGP, teamed up with Lucy Savage, College Sports Maker for Wortech College, to take over  the student common room and offer a morning of golf.

More than 90 students took part in the activities with Alan being supported by Ashley Picken from Gaudet Luce Golf Club.

Alan explains: "We offered a free golf session to gauge the interest of students who may want to join a golf club and be offered coaching sessions to assist them as they potentially continue with the sport.

"We have the Get into golf initiative within many of our Worcestershire clubs which allows anyone to try a taster session for free with the local golf professional coach, then follow this up by being offered five sessions for just £25.

"That is only £5 per session which may be well within reach of many people, including students, looking to try the sport without committing too much money.

"The overall aim is to attract more people into golf clubs and to become a member and stay in the game as part of a healthy and fun lifestyle.

"The type of sessions we have run for the students are ideal for any kind of community groups or local businesses and we would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in arranging a visit."

Get into golf is a national campaign to inspire new golfers run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of County Golf Partnerships, which work to grow the game.

Get into golf opportunities include free or low-cost beginner courses with PGA professionals. They are a fun and sociable way to start golf – and a great way to make new friends.

Discounted lessons can cost as little as £25 for a five-week course.
