Motocaddy M1 Pro Feature Review

By: Nick Bonfield | Wed 14 Aug 2013

The golfing electric trolley market is growing rapidly at the moment, and two brands stand at the top of the list of Motocaddy M1 Propioneers: Motocaddy and PowaKaddy. It’s a sector of the golfing industry that barely existed 15 years ago, but impressive engineering, creativity and relatively modest price points have facilitated an increased interest from a wide cross-section of the golfing community. Today’s offerings come with USB ports, remote controls, umbrella stands, long-life batteries and a range of other accessories that have given golfers unrivalled and unprecedented choice in the electric trolley market.

I recently had the opportunity to test of the Motocaddy M1 PRO – a highly-regarded new model that has justifiably earned its place on the list of the very best electric trolleys available today. Below, I’ve reviewed the M1 PRO in three different categories: ergonomics and aesthetics, size, build quality and features performance and functionality.

Ergonomics and aesthetics:

The first thing to note is the impressive, lightweight design and striking green colour scheme – which gives the trolley a colourful look without being overly garish. It also comes with a non-glare matte finish. For something so sizeable, it’s very easy to manoeuvre, which I think is one of the most important aspects of any motorised trolley. That ease is facilitated, in part, by the distribution of weight throughout the model, but also by the positioning of the handle. Some models I’ve tested have the handle too high up, so you have to break your wrist, but the M1 PRO’s is ideally positioned – enabling smooth turning and a comfortable resting position. And, if you’re not content, the handle height adjuster will enable to find the position that works best for you. The black handle itself is comfortable to hold on to for an extended period of time and looks very stylish, especially when contrasted with the white parts of the frame.

Size, build quality and features:

For me, one of the stand-out features of the M1 PRO is the compact folding size and the incredibly easy folding Motocaddy M1 Promechanisms. Even I, someone who isn’t the most adept at practical construction tasks, found the three-point folding system extremely simple to follow. There are five steps and folding mechanisms, each numbered in order, that will minify the size of the trolley in less than a minute. The M1 PRO is very compact indeed, fitting easily into your car boot, and, what’s more, the battery doesn’t have to be removed for the folding process to begin. It’s more than 40% smaller than its S-Series counterparts, an impressive design and engineering feat.

The battery options are also notable. The 18-hole lithium and lead-acid batteries are effective power sources and, if charged properly, will never desert you or run short during a round of golf – even on the hilliest terrain. Both motors are also whisper quiet, which ensures the etiquette of the game is preserved.   With regards the bag, the adjustable supports can secure varying sizes in place with consummate ease, so your bag will stay in place as you traverse even the most undulating terrain. Other features worthy of note are the integrated accessory station and the patented USB port, which can charge a range of portable devices during the round – a beneficial add-on in an age where an increasing number of players rely on phones, GPSs and other accessories to deliver yardages, course information and more.

Performance and functionality:

Of course, any electric trolley will be measured on performance, and looks, size and aesthetics pale into insignificance if Motocaddy M1 Proit can’t deliver on the course. Fortunately, the M1 PRO can. There are nine different speed settings, and the knob to change up or down is conveniently located in the middle of the handle, so you can switch speeds with your thumb. Another huge benefit is the multi-function screen, which enables you to see exactly what setting you are on and how much battery you have remaining – features lacking on other similar trolleys. Adjustable distance control, up to 45 metres, also means you can set your trolley off up the fairway and go to help your playing partner look for his/her ball, for example. Obviously, terrain gradient isn’t consistent, so this feature is great when you have an expanse of open space in front of you.

The M1 PRO deals adeptly with steep gradients and, whilst you shouldn’t push the trolley through thick, wispy rough, the wheels – which also boast good grip – cut through heavier grass effectively. It is easy to turn, control and pivot, and the nine speed setting ensure anyone will find a speed that corresponds to their stride and walking pace.

Weaknesses:

The M1 PRO isn’t flawless, but nothing is. If I were to be critical, I’d say 10.5 kg is still quite heavy, and some people would have issues lifting it into their car. Whilst I liked the colour scheme, I also think some people might be find it slightly too bright – especially the green areas indicating where to fold the trolley. What’s more, the universal weaknesses of electric trolleys – such as restrictions on access and the inability to follow your ball on a line into dense rough - also apply.

Bottom Line

Still, I think the M1 PRO is an excellent trolley. It folds away nicely, it’s easy to use and construct, the ergonomics are good, the design is impressive, the batteries and nine different speeds cover all bases and the raft of additional features are unrivalled in the electric trolley market. It’s an impressive product and one I’d definitely recommend. Overall, I’d give the M1 PRO a rating of 8.5/10.
