Two New Centres Launched to Help Would-Be Golfers in Durham

By: Golf Shake | Mon 03 Jun 2013

Get into GolfThe drive to encourage more adults into golf is on the up in Durham County. Two new starter centres have been launched for 2103 to make the sport as accessible as possible.

More than 400 people took advantage of free taster sessions and discounted coaching last year at six facilities across the county to get involved in golf for the first time.

Now the Durham County Golf Partnership is looking to build on that success by establishing two new Get into golf centres at Bishop Auckland Golf Club and Chester le Street Golf Club.

These GolfMark accredited clubs join the six established facilities in supporting the national Get into golf campaign, with the aim of attracting more adults (16+) into golf and providing a pathway towards regular participation and potential golf club membership.

Says Jonathan Ward, development officer for the Durham CGP: “We want to show how much golf has to offer in terms of a fun sport, healthy exercise and enjoyable social life, which will help to break down the barriers often associated with the sport and golf club membership.

“Since 2011 the Durham CGP has successfully supported many Get into golf projects across the region, which have seen more than 1,000 people attend. Many have gone on to take advantage of the numerous opportunities, including trial and beginner club memberships and other introductory offers, aimed at retaining those taking part.”

The PGA professionals at the adult starter centres offer a continuous programme of subsidised four-week group beginners courses throughout the year, where the dress code is relaxed and all equipment is supplied.

Adds Jonathan Ward: “By adding two new centres, we are ensuring that no-one in Durham will have to travel too far to find a place to start playing golf near their home.

“The courses offer a taste of all aspects of the game, including basic rules and etiquette, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

“All the centres want to show how the sport has moved away from its stereo-typed image and how it is open to new players regardless of gender, background, ethnicity or ability.”

Get into golf is a national campaign to inspire new golfers run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of County Golf Partnerships, which work to grow the game.

Get into golf opportunities include free or low-cost beginner coaching with PGA professionals. They are a fun and sociable way to start golf – and a great way to make new friends.
