Round-up of the Weekend

By: Adam Smith | Mon 24 Oct 2011

PGA Tour – Donald taking the Mickey at Walt Disney World

Luke Donald produced one of the best back-nine’s of his career to not only win the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic but to top the PGA Tour Money List as well.

Six birdies on a trot from the 10th hole took Donald to what ended up being an unattainable lead at the top of the leaderboard and with Webb Simpson who started the week at the top of the money only finishing in a tie for sixth place, it was enough for Donald to leap over him and claim top spot.

A final round eight-under 64 for Donald on the Magnolia Course in the heart of Walt Disney World, Florida, seemed a long way off after he bogeyed the 8th hole before his superb run of birdies which blew away the field.

The world number one is now on course to be the first player in history to win the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic as he has over a million Euro lead in the Race to Dubai over nearest challenger Rory McIlroy.

Life is good for Donald as his wife Diane is due to give birth to their second child and he is now the name on everyone’s lips for the PGA Tour Player of the Year. His peers and his wife were quick to praise him on social network site Twitter along with Diane’s updates on the baby:

"I don't think this much jumping up and down is good for the baby!!!" She said after Donald holed a monster putt on the 15th.

For Donald he said it was nice to silence some of his critics after coming home in 30.

"What better time to go on a run than the back nine on Sunday”, he said.

"It's nice to do it under pressure when I needed to. I'm thrilled and over the moon."

The tournament itself was there for the taking as overnight leader Justin Leonard failed to capitalise as he shot a one-under 71 and ended up in second place on his own on 15-under. But he and Simpson had no answer for Donald’s surge showing why he is the best player in the world.

European Tour – Garcia Back to His Best on Home Soil

Sergio Garcia rolled back the years and produced one of the display’s of the season by romping to an 11-shot victory at his home Tournament the Castello Masters.

It was a welcome return to form for Garcia who fired a final round 63 on his home course to win the title for the second time in his career.

His family, friends and football team-mates were out in force to celebrate down every fairway and when the job was done, Garcia dedicated the win to Seve Ballesteros.

The Club de Campo del Mediterraneo course where Victor Garcia, Sergio’s father is the professional was at the mercy of young Garcia all week and he had the determination in his eye that hasn’t been seen for a while. He said his game is very nearly there and it is only good news not only for the game but for European Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal who stated this week that he would like Garcia on his team at Medinah and not as his vice-captain.

His total of 27-under par was the highest on the European Tour this season. Fellow Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano who flew around the front-nine in 29 shots finished second on 16-under, one ahead of Swede Alex Noren.

The world’s top players will head to Shanghai this week for the last World Golf Championship of the season – The HSBC Champions Tournament. Full report right here next Monday.
