Round-up of the Weekend

By: Adam Smith | Tue 21 Jun 2011

US Open

Rory McIlroy won his first Major title as he completed his four-day rout, winning the US Open by eight shots.

The Northern Irishman dominated the field from day one and the fans at the Congressional Country Club roared him home with chants as if he was one of their own.

The 22-year-old became the youngest US Open champion since Bobby Jones back in 1923 and the game’s youngest major winner since Tiger Woods won in similar style at the 1997 Masters.

McIlroy led from day one after a stunning opening 65 which he followed up with a 66 on Friday as records started to tumble.

He quickly became the quickest player in the history of the Open to reach 10 under which he did after 26 holes, the first ever player to go past 12 under and the best 36 and 54 hole totals.

Approaching the weekend when thoughts of the Masters were in the back of everybody’s minds McIlroy kept cool under pressure attacking when he could but elements of playing safe as well as he chipped out sideways at the third on Saturday, still going on to make par.

Leading by eight going into the final day and any thoughts of Augusta were banished as a birdie of the first put his lead to nine.

He strolled to victory playing with a maturity way beyond his years and breaking another record, this time the best 72-hole total seen at a US Open.

The trophy will be kept in Northern Ireland after Greame McDowell’s win last year and he becomes the 11th different major winner in a row.

"The whole week has been incredible - I could not have asked for any more and I am so happy to hold this trophy," said McIlroy

“For such a small nation to win two US Opens in a row is pretty special. As Graeme [McDowell] said last year, there will be a lot of pints of Guinness going down.

"I know a few of my friends will be partying and I can't wait to get home and join them."

Now up to number four in the world rankings many believe there is more to come from the Ulsterman. A win at Royal St Georges in July would certainly be on the minds of a lot of people.

Australian Jason Day finished second for a second consecutive major with world number two Lee Westwood third.
