Golfers on Twitter - Inside the Ropes

By: Darren Ramowski | Mon 06 Dec 2010

TwitterWe've covered this before and the continued use of the social media platform Twitter by many pro golfers but over the last week the number 1 and number 2 golfers in the world have now decided to get involved.

The cynics would say that a lot of the celebrities and sports stars aren't really using it and their accounts are run by the brand and PR agencies.  This may be true for some but Tiger Woods is slowly getting to grips with how Twitter works and I'm sure the brand & PR agencies shudder every time Ian Poulter gets his phone out.  Poulter's been covered in the press in several high profile stories including rants & arguments with fans and the recent controversy over eating his breakfast out of the Ryder Cup

Poulter is one of the more high profile players to be using the service and it's great to get a real insight into the players lives, how much travel they do and WHAT THEY REALLY think.  Although again cynics would say this is pure self indulgence and more brand opportunities in making headlines, something Poulter did against recently after publicly nicknaming Woods, Number 2 to quote, 'Tiger called across the putting green today & said don't you know how to mark ur ball, I said settle down No 2'

It now looks like World number one Lee Westwood is enjoying the use and interaction of Twitter.

Having recently joined the social service and getting a few pointers from Poulter, Westwood is also becoming the PR teams nightmare but for us golf fans it's great to get a true insight.

Today Westwood is treading on controversy after discussing the recent award of Rookie of the Year to Rickie Fowler

He added further to this and now continues to discuss with people around the world as the US start to wake up and read his comments.

'Please correct me if anything I said was not true. I congratulated Ricky on his year and he's a good lad but I bet even he did not expect to win it. People should say what they think if it's true and an injustice has been done. It's a too politically correct world we live in now days.'
