Round-up of the Weekend

By: Adam Smith | Mon 25 Oct 2010

European Tour

Italian wonderkid Matteo Manassero became the youngest ever winner on the European Tour as he claimed the Castello Masters title in Valencia.

His four-shot victory over native Ignacio Garrido was complete as he holed three consecutive birdie putts on the back-nine to reach 16 under.

The 17-year old became a professional in May and also becomes the youngest ever full European Tour player eclipsing the record held by Seve Ballesteros by just 12 days.

"It feels fantastic. It's unbelievable, a very special moment," said Manassero.

"I couldn't imagine to be a winner the first year, it was just to keep my card and now I'm a winner already."

The former British amateur champion went into the final day two shots behind England's Gary Boyd who fired a course record equaling 63 on Saturday to move into pole position.

The back-nine is where it all turned as the Italian piled on the pressure and on the 15th and 16th holes Manassero finally got his head in front after Boyd bogeyed 15 and then found water on 16, eventually walking off with a double bogey.

Boyd then dropped another shot on the 17th to drop him back in a tie for third.

Manassero's incredible performance at 17 years and 188 days, broke the record that had been held by New Zealander Danny Lee who was 18 years and 213 days old when he won the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic.

Final round leaderboard:
-16 M Manassero (Ita) -12 I Garrido (Spa) -11 J Luiten (Ned), Peter Lawrie (Ire), G Boyd (Eng), C Nilsson (Swe)

PGA Tour

There was an incredible finish to the Shriners Classic in Las Vegas as Jonathan Byrd hit a hole-in-one on the fourth play-off hole to take the title.

In the fading light, the trio debated whether to keep playing and, when they did, Byrd holed the 204-yard par-three 17th to earn victory in spectacular style.

Defending champion Martin Laird and American Cameron Percy were also involved as all three players finished on 21 under par.

"I didn't see it," he stated. "I'm in shock. I think the people at the green were the only people who could see it." Said Byrd

Laird, who had taken a one-shot lead into the final round, and Percy both put their tee shots into the water to confirm the win for Byrd.

Challenge Tour

Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for 12th place in the Egyptian Open as Chilean Mark Tullo fired a final round 66 to take the title and secure his card on the 2011 European Tour.

McIlroy was in Egypt to help promote the event.
