Ryder Cup update

By: Adam Smith | Thu 30 Sep 2010

Fourball Pairings

Match 1: Mickelson / D.Johnson Vs Westwood / Kaymer

Match 2: Cink / Kuchar Vs McIlroy / McDowell

Match 3: Stricker / Woods Vs Poulter / Fisher

Match 4: Watson / Overton Vs Harrington / Donald

Westwood

Lee Westwood, the man many have tipped to be the European talisman has said that he will lead from the front.

The Worksop pro said it will be 'chest out, chin up' as the most experienced European player comes back from injury. The world number three has recovered from a calf injury to compete in his seventh Ryder Cup but also admits that he may not play every match:

"I wouldn't be here if I don't think I could play five matches," said Westwood.

"So if Monty [Montgomerie] chooses to play me for five, then hopefully I'll be ready for it.

"I think we've got a strong enough team that we can rest players. It is a tough course physically and maybe the plan would be to rest players."

Team USA

Was it mind games from Pavin? Only he will know but the USA captain decided to send his players out in three balls today instead of the usual four.

That meant Tiger Woods played alongside Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker - two players he is strongly tipped to partner this weekend.

Elsewhere, Phil Mickelson went out with Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler, while Bubba Watson teamed up with Jeff Overton and Hunter Mahan. The final group saw Zach Johnson, Stewary Cink and Matt Kuchar play together.

European Practice

Monty also sprang a few surprises as the Mc pairing was broken up for the first time. Rory McIlroy Partnered Lee Westwood while Graeme McDowell played with Ian Poulter in what was a successful pairing in 2008.

The Molinari's were again together this time against Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer. The unlikely pairing of Miguel Angel Jimenez and Peter Hanson were again together leaving Ross Fish and Padraig Harrington to pair up.

So it's 14 hours, 34 minutes, 45 seconds.....not that I'm counting!
