Blossoming Rose

By: Adam Smith | Mon 05 Jul 2010

Justin Rose winning the Memorial TournamentAfter storming onto the scene at the tender age of 17, an amateur was thrown into stardom after holing a pitch from the rough in the 1998 British Open to finish in a tie for fourth place.

A week after, the fresh faced youngster turned professional hoping to follow on from his Open heroics.

What he wasn’t prepared for was the sudden down turn in his game and struggles he’s had in getting back to the form he showed as a promising youngster.

Twelve long hard years later, Justin Rose is finally back in the big time.

After missing 21 cuts in a row following his turn to the professional ranks, Rose finally had a change in fortunes and claimed his first tour title in his birth place of South Africa at the Dunhill Championship in 2002.

Three further victories followed in that year including the British Masters plus wins on the Sunshine and Japanese Tours and at the turn of the year Rose had his highest ever World Ranking at number 33.

Following his switch in fortunes Rose tried to mix his calendar between the European and US Tours in which he struggled.

In the March of 2005 he announced his decision to quit the European Tour to concentrate fully on playing in America.

This did not help his golf game and suddenly Rose found himself outside the top 100 in the world.

He soon had a re-think and in the August of the same year he applied to for his card back on the European Tour.
Better performances began to come but he failed to clinch any victories despite having leads in the Buick Championship and the 2006 Canadian Open.

The end of 2006 was certainly the turning point in his career. After winning his first tour title in four years at the Australian Masters he married long-term girlfriend in December and began his rise back to where he is today.

2007 saw Rose win the European Order of Merit after a top five finish in the Masters and losing in a play-off in the BMW PGA Championship, he was at the European summit after a thrilling win at the season ending Volvo Masters in a play-off, Rose found himself at seven in the world Rankings.

He did get down to six and for many months he was the highest ranked British golfer after spending over 30 weeks in the top-ten.

After making his Ryder Cup debut in 2008, 2010 has by far been his best year.

Now full-time on the PGA Tour he had a third-placed finish at the Honda Classic and then broke his duck on tour and won the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.
The day after his victory, Rose had to try and qualifyfor the US Open due to his fall in the World rankings.

He failed but in his next start he lead by three going into the final day at the Travellers Championship.Unfortunately for him, Rose couldn’t make it two wins in a row after shooting 75 and ending in tie for ninth.

He was determined not to let his head drop however and at the weekend, Rose proved once again that he is ready to challenge the World’s top golfers with victory at the AT&T National.

Again leading going into the final day this time by four shots, Rose held his nerve to clinch his ninth career title.

Now at 16 in the World and second in the FedEx Cup race, Rose is almost a certainty for October’s Ryder Cup. Let’s see if he can keep this form up until then and help out in a European victory and after that who knows maybe a major victory on the horizon.
