Round-up of the weekend

Justin RoseIt was another great week for European golf at the weekend as Justin Rose and Miguel Angel Jimenez claimed tour titles.

It was Roses second win in three weeks on the US PGA Tour after his win at the Memorial Tournament last month.

It could of easily of been three wins in a row for the English golfer as he lead going into the final day last week as well.

Jimenez became the oldest ever winner of the French Open as he claimed the title in a three way play-off.

The 46-year-old survived a final hole double bogey, to put him in the play-off but then turned his fortunes around the win on the first extra play-off hole.

He beat Francesco Molinari and Alejandro Canizares in the play-off after shooting a final round 67 to put himself in contention.

Martin Kaymer, who led by one shot overnight, looked to have recovered from an edgy front nine when he picked up two birdies in three holes.

But one behind Jimenez his hopes finally ended, also at the 15th, when he pushed his second and trickled into the vast expanse of water in front of the green, and his miserable day was completed by another double bogey at the last.

Molinari had completed a final round 67 some while before the play-off began, and that delay did him no favours as he drove into the fairway bunker when the three players tied at 11-under played the 18th again.

Canizares twice went into the water at the dramatic finishing par-four hole but Jimenez, from a perfect position in the middle of the fairway, ensured the tension remained when his second shot flew over the green and found an awkward lie on a bank.

After Jimenez's chip ran around 15 foot past, Molinari, who had found the sand again, made a fine putt for a five, but the Spaniard holed out for the title.

In soaring temperatures in Pennsylvania on a July 4 Sunday it was an English Rose who didn’t read the script.

Rose claimed the AT&T National title with a final round 70 to win by one shot from Ryan Moore who put pressure on the leader later in the round.

Going into the final day four shots clear, Rose had last week’s collapse in the back of his mind but played steadily to shoot level-par after holding his nerve to hole two crucial par putts on 17 and 18.

The win earns Rose a spot in the British Open in two weeks time, and justifies his decision not to play in the qualifiers a few weeks earlier.

It was another English victory on the Ladies European Tour as Trish Johnson captured her 19th career victory as she edged Frenchwoman Virginie Lagoutte-Clement by a shot at the Tenerife Ladies Open.

The 44-year-old started the final round with a three shot lead and fired a final round of 70 to complete 72 holes on the Buenavista Golf course in 14 under 274.
