Martin Millichip - 2010 NvS North Captain

By: Darren Ramowski | Mon 08 Mar 2010

Martin Millichip 2010 North CaptainPlayer spotlight focus on the 2008 Golfshake Order of Merit winner and 2010 North Team Captain, Martin Millichip .

How long have you been playing golf and what's your current handicap ?

I have been playing golf since I was 15 years old but didn’t start playing more seriously until I joined Nottingham City Golf Club about 7-8 years ago. Then joined Mapperley Golf Club in 2007 and have seen my handicap come down from 11 to 7 (Exact 6.8) in the last 18 months. Started on a 15 handicap.

What's you golfing aspiration, lower you handicap, have fun, compete on tour ?

I have a number of aspirations this year concerning my golf. I want to become a category 1 golfer (Handicap of 5.4) or better, but also to help the North Team regain the North v South Trophy this year as I am leading them as Captain this year. I always have fun when I play but I am very competitive so losing is not something I take well to !!!!

Where and how often do you normally play ?

As I said above most of my golf is played at my own club, Mapperley, but I play a lot of golf at other courses, whether it be with the local Nottinghamshire Golfers Pro-Am Alliance, club friendlies and league matches, Golfshake events, County Golf League events (A society I am a member of) or just organised games with friends. I try to play at least -4 times per week in the height of the summer (Weather and Wife permitting !!) and generally as often as possible throughout the winter.

What's the best part of your game and what do you need to work on ?

I feel the best part of my game is my consistency. I don’t generally hit the ball a long way compared to some but normally I am straight and accurate, which I think is a good indicator as to why my handicap has come down to where it is over the last couple of years. I am currently working on my long game which I feel is the weakest part of my game at the moment (3woods/rescues etc)

What was your best golf shot or memory so far ?

I will always be proud of the fact that I won the first Golfshake.com Order of Merit in 2008. It came at a time where my golf was in good shape and I played lots of good shots all the way through the season. Also, playing in the Algarve for the first time this year. Played some great courses with a really good bunch of guys.

What's your favourite course ?

I love links golf, so it would have to be a toss up between Conwy Golf Club in North Wales and Seacroft Golf Club in Skegness, Lincolnshire. It really does test your game when the winds howling at you from all directions !!

Where would you love to play ?

There is only one place and that’s Augusta. Watch the Masters religiously every year and would just love to say that I have played there.

What's your ultimate fourball ?

Ben Hogan – Arguably the best striker of a golf ball that there has been. Could learn a lot from him.

Jack Nicklaus – One of the best golfers of his era and at the moment unsurpassed in terms of major wins.

Seve Ballesteros – A magician, could do things with a golf ball we could only dream of. Just to be there and witness how he escapes from anywhere on the course would be amazing.

Tiger Woods – Despite his off course affairs, is simply the best golfer ever to play the game.
