All you need to know about Indoor Golf

By: Golf Shake | Fri 15 Jan 2010

Tired of the cold weather? Then go and play Indoor Golf! Find all you info you need on Indoor golf.

What is Indoor Golf?

Playing indoor golf for the first time really is eye opening. The accuracy of the shots is amazing and it is changing the way even top golfers think about golf.
It gives club players the chance to play on courses they will never play in their lifetime, and it’s also a great way to socialise with friends, family and other golfers.

CyberGolf on Nottingham’s St James’s Street is just one of many scattered around the country, and with the current weather conditions it is giving golfers a chance to stay in the swing of things.
All indoor centres use a state of the art system called ‘The Full Swing Golf simulator’ which in their words gives you the most realistic golfing experience indoors. By combining the very best in software, ball tracking systems, image projection and touchscreen control, it provides golfers with the most accurate simulation of the game of golf available.

CyberGolf has the option of going on the driving range before you play, that will catch your ball flight and even spin. Then the system has 50 of the world’s top courses available for you to play including St Andrews, Pebble Beach, Valderrama, Pinehurst and The Belfry.

Golf Simulators

All elements of the ball flight are tracked by the built-in infrared systems either side of the bay, including flight angle, ball speed and spin. This is then instantly displayed on the hitting/projection screen. The moment the golf ball strikes the screen, a computer-generated image of the ball takes over, flying up the fairway ready for the next shot. The software tells the user where their ball is, what distance they have to the green, where they are aiming, and what the wind conditions are.
Cutting edge software allows for complete customisation of the gaming environment, including course and weather conditions, on-screen viewing options, and numerous modes of play including best ball, skins, scramble and stroke play formats.

The Full Swing Golf system is so accurate it is just like playing the real thing. Hooks, slices, topspin and backspin are all read accurately. Punch the ball low to avoid the wind while playing St. Andrews and your shot does exactly that on the screen.
I know what you’re thinking, it can’t be that accurate? Well trust me it is, currently being used by PGA Professionals here and in America, the state of the art technology is spot on.
It’s not just PGA pros using it in the States, many of the centres here in the U.K have trained professionals working in them offering lessons for all ages and qualities from novice to budding pro. There’s no dress code and no handicap restrictions all you have to do is turn up and have fun.

You do have to finish the hole's off as you would when playing the real thing. Grab your putter and aim towards the red line on screen. In theory, if you hit in and around the line at a good pace you should see your ball drop in the hole, however it is quite hard to get the pace right. Anything with 6ft is a gimme though, so take that and move onto the next hole.
