Poulter first win since 2007
Posted by: Darren Ramowski on Wed 04 Nov 2009
The weekend saw Ian Poulter win the Barclays Singapore Open in a co-sanctioned European and Asian Tour event at the Sentosa Golf & Country Club , claiming his first title since 2007.
The Englishman topped a world class field with a determined display around the testing Sentosa course. After briefly giving up the lead on the 11th hole to Graeme McDowell, Poulter sank a 30 foot putt just two holes later on the 13th to regain his position at the top of the leaderboard. Following a delicate up and down from the sand on the 17th, Poulter maintained his confidence on the 18th with a solid par to claim his eighth European Tour title with a one shot victory over China's Liang Wen-chong.
Ian Poulter has revealed that he only had a couple of practice sessions trying out his the new Cobra ZL driver but decided to put in the bag for the event.
Poulter said, “It arrived last Wednesday and I left on Saturday. So I had literally two days to try it. I liked it so much I put it in the bag and now here we are with a win.”
"It is the right time to win as the Ryder Cup points have now started and I wanted to come out over the next seven weeks – five of which are counting for world ranking points and Ryder Cup points – and put as much money on the board as I possibly could".
The 33-year-old Englishman, who led from the opening round, finished at 10-under 274.
"I made some mistakes today, making it a little too close for comfort," Poulter said. "But it turned out well in the end."
The victory earned Poulter $833,330 and moved him up 19 places to 10th in the rankings of the European Tour's Race to Dubai.
