Ross Fisher claims Volvo World Match Play Championship

Posted by: Darren Ramowski on Wed 04 Nov 2009

Ross Fisher captured his biggest career win to date with an awesome display of precision golf around the testing Finca Cortesin course in Spain at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

The win came on Fisher’s 126th hole of the week where a par 4 saw him capture the win that had so far eluded him during a season of great performances.

Fisher captured the win, with a 4&3 margin of victory over Anthony Kim in the final match, after edging out Masters Champion Angel Cabrera in the semi final on the 3rd extra hole.

"The putting hasn't been as good as it could have been recently, but finally it got hot," Fisher told reporters. "When I needed to this afternoon I made some crucial putts.

"Anthony's a gritty competitor, one of the grittiest, so I knew I could never relax. I told myself to play like you're one down and keep fighting all the way.

"This has given me a massive confidence boost. I've done well in the majors this year and this has given me a great chance for the Race to Dubai," added the 28-year-old who moves up to fourth on the list.

Kim 24, added: "I never seemed to make a string of three or four birdies in a row and that's what cost me. I gave it all I had but unfortunately it wasn't good enough."

Following strong finishes at the US Open and The Open Championship, Fisher has elevated himself to fourth on the inaugural Race to Dubai rankings and 17th position in the Official World Golf Rankings following this week’s win.
