Monty Comments on Social Media and Darth Monty

By: Golfshake Editor | Thu 21 Jul 2016

Post by Golf Writer Kieran Clark at Carnoustie

Ahead of this week's Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie, eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie was asked about the prolific parody account (@Darth_Monty) that has frequently amused both fans and critics of the 53-year-old Ryder Cup legend.

The question came up following the Scot's outspoken frustrations about the virtues of social media and his perceptions of the people who frequently post on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. During a colourful and entertaining pre-tournament press conference, the three-time senior major winner said: "I mean, social media, what the hell -- what do people do? Are they not busy? Are they not doing something with their lives? Do something bloody well constructive and get on with it. Like either try tennis or play golf or something and try and emulate those stars of today, the way I did."

This led to a query from one journalist in attendance, who asked: "You're speaking of social media addicts with far too much time on their hands, are you familiar (with) the Twitter account parody account, @Darth_Monty?"

Perhaps to everyone's great surprise, the Sky Sports commentator had heard of his mystery impersonator. "Yes, I've been told of it. I think he's a fan. Definitely say all credit to me or something -- that's right, that's him. I love him," joked Montgomerie.

"Yeah, I'll call him a fan because it's probably the only one I've got, so I'll call him a fan. He's great. He always tends to copy what I'm saying. He's fantastic. But I don't have Twitter on here (his phone) -- I don't know what it is."

Darth later caught wind of this rare mention from his hero, which clearly enthralled the account that boasts 15,000 followers.

Now that we know Monty himself is aware of his biggest fan on Twitter, the remaining mystery is actually discovering the true identity of the imposter. As the conference concluded to a chorus of laughs, one veteran writer playfully confessed that he really was the one behind the mask. Quite a thought. Though we sadly may never uncover the truth.

All credit to them.
