Provisional Ball Placement

I Tee off and my ball heads towards a water hazard but past it and possibly lost on the other side, can i take my provisional ball from where the ball crossed the water hazzard or MUST it be played from the original strike(the Tee box)?

Only from the original location "as near as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played"
