Custom Fitting second hand irons?

A new proshop recently opened close to where I live and i dropped in yesterday as I'm on the market for new irons.

They've a great 'grand opening' deal on a set of second hand Mizuno irons, exactly what I was after. But I promised myself that the next set I buy would be custom fitted as I've never been fitted for irons before.

Would it be cheaky of me to ask them to custom fit a set of ultra-cheap irons? I mean they've already knocked £200 off.

Also, is it usual for a proshop to custon fit used irons?

I doubt the pro shop has all the equipment needed to alter clubs to suit you, Ray. Just find a specialist builder to do them for you.

The problem with that JP is I've got a 6 month old baby at home, I've just paid my club membership, I doubt I could squeeze any more of the home budget for specialist club builder. The Mizuno's are £129. I can just about afford that.

But I'd rather wait for custom fitted clubs than grab a bargain that won't suit me.

Ideally I'd like to grab a bargain that WILL suit me!

It would be nice if an expert irons' club builder wrote a full explanatory article on this forum about frequency matching etc. irons as there is widespread confusion over the difference between a pro. shop simply altering club lie and club length and a full fitting.

If the golfing public don't understand what you do then they won't order your services.

Will a genuine 'hands on' expert please step forward and explain?

Ray, the choice is yours completely and you are indeed fortunate to have a choice. When I started this game one could only buy sets off the rack in a pro shop. Custom fitting had not been invented, neither had game improvement clubs or metal woods, yet we played to a much higher average standard than that of today.

I doubt they would custom fit these irons for free, certainly not if they need lengthening/shortening as removal of the grips and probably new ones will need to be fitted-depending on the condition of course. Thats got to be at least a fiver each club without adjusting lofts and lies. You might be lucky tho, you could be Mizuno Mr average.
