Wierd lie... missed chance...

After hitting a perfect 240yard drive on the 7th hole yesterday, I get a horrible lie for my second shot.

It was 'ball above my feet' AND 'Slope down from left to right' (I'm a right hander so it's uphill to the green)

I really didn't know what to do! Ended up duffing it terrible and finished with a 5 when a 3 would have been possible!

Any advice on these sorts of lies?

Im good at ball above the feet shots, if it's flat otherwise. And i'm fine with playig an uphill shot. But the two together...

Whenever you are faced with slopes always get your body perpendicular with it. So for an uphill shot you should lean your body more to the right and place more weight on the lower foot.

By doing this you will add more loft to the club so make sure you take extra. When swinging make sure you follow the slope.

An uphill lie will encourage you to draw the ball more, your weight cannot transfer onto your left side so your hands become more active. Combine this with ball above feet and you would need to aim well right of the green.

For downhill slopes do the opposite, but when you follow through try to retain the loft on the club for as long as possible to help get it airbourne.

When playing uphill or downhill lies, should the ball be positioned any different in your stance? I.e. further forward or backward than usual for a flat lie?

Also ...

Ball below my feet! I hate this shot ... always end up topping the ball. Any tips?

Keep the ball position the same Paul, just lean with the slope. For ball below your feet make sure you retain your posture through impact, you should do this anyway but even more so when its below you.

For a severe slope, widen your stance and grip as far up the club as possible. The swing will be more arms than legs so club up to get the distance required.

Thanks Steve.

Its interesting that you mention the swing being more arms as its the body swing that felt so un-natural and hard to perform and keep my balance with when the slope was quite steep.

If I get into the same situation this weekend, I'll try and remember your advice.

Cheers.
