And if so what do you get round in.

Last 2 weeks I've got round in 39 which I'm not too disappointed with all things considered.

I've only ever played twice on a 9 hole par 3, and both times I've been round in 27.  Having said that, one of the tracks (at Rutland County) was pretty agricultural and we were playing matchplay, and my opponent  (hi Malc!) had a bit of a mare.  Even my miss hits were good and I even managed to get a nearest the pin award after thinning my tee shot to within a foot.

Like to have a go at a few more though, but I'm always left with a feeling of frustration afterwards because the round is over in a flash...

Sounds like the story of the last year for you Tim!

I personally think that unless you play a good quality par3 course you will gain nothing from the round, there are a number around where I live in Sheffield but the only one I would recommend playing is Bondhay. At least they put some time and effort into looking after the par3 course and not just leave it to ruin like many others. I played Bondhay a few weeks back and was going great until a disastrous 8 (yes eight!). I was on for a 33 until that hole. When I analyse my scores on golfshake I do drop a lot of shots on par  holes so I aim for 5-8 above par for the par round (32-35). If you try to hit this score on a bad quality par 3 it is so hit and miss as the greens are terrible and the mats bare.

There's a really nice 9 holer at Woolley Park (just west of Barnsley). Shortest hole is around 128yds and there's a couple over 200yds. The course and greens are really well kept. Not many hazzards but the rough can be quite horrendous when they let it get long.

I have been fortunate enough to play and win the British Par3 Championships. The last few years it has been held at Nailcote Hall Hotel in Warwickshire. I managed to fend off 16 tour pros that year to claim the spoils, a wheelbarrow full of £1 coins.

The longest hole is 140yds and the shortest and toughest is only 60yds. If you get a chance to play it do so. I won that event in 2007 with a 36 hole total of -6 but was 6 under on my last 18.

I also won a southern event at Burgess Hill Golf centre down near Brighton. I was -9 for 18 holes there, the putter was very hot.

Funnily enough played a nine-hole par-3 this weekend. Only the second time I've played it (Stevenage) and went round in 33. Not bad for me, with my usually untidy short game. Only one hole was long enough to require a five iron; the other holes required nothing longer than a nine. Pitch and putt I think is what you call it!

Another course near me, Chesfield Downs (where Ian Poulter was club champion), has a very well kept par-3 course. Very tricky greens and a good test of your short game and putting in particular.

Started playing back in September on the Nailcote Hall Par 3 mentioned above, worth a look as in season it is well kept. 8 and 9 are a test of skill or bravado as they will both bite you on the backside.
