For regripping - I understand you need double sided tape, slovent and grips.....with regards the tape and solvent, are these anything special or are they things you can buy from DIY stores? What have you guys done?

 cheers

All of these items are readily available, Lewis. I have done my own grips before but I now use our own Mr David Ley as he can source the type of grip that I prefer to use.

I've bought an old set of good condition Hogan irons to go with my old woods, they just need re-gripping. I'm quite hands on so I'm going to give it a go.

We are expecting some snow up here....and those lot are out there in the sun!

Don't worry about that lot out in the sun, Lewis, they have to come back at the week-end and they will find the shock of the snow will get to them far more than at will us.

When you do grip the clubs, Lewis make sure you get the thickness of tape right for your grip. Myself I only have one layer of tape as I like very thin grips.

I haven't got big hands (especially for a rugby player) and I'm still not fully settled on if I'm a vardon or interlock grip guy, because my left index finger knuckle has been broken three times, it is quite big...so I find that sometimes my r/h little finger gets pulled to wide with an interlock grip and I think my hands are just too small for a vardon grip to feel perfect. It might be that my clubs have too much tape underneath.

So I too think that a thin grip cover would help me loads to have a comfortable grip on the club

Lewis for re-gripping you'll need a vice, rubber vice clamp to protect your shafts, hook stanley blade for removing the old grips, grip tape or double sided masking tape. I prefer to get a roll about an inch wide and apply it as a spiral down the shaft leaving a small gap between the winds. Then you'll need some white spirit and maybe a tray to catch the excess to lubricate apply the new grips.

Wouldn't use 2 inch tape or 12 inch strips. Its a nightmare to get off again the next time you come to re-grip them or the 1st time when you come to do it depending on how they were done the last time.

I also don't recommend using a knife to remove tape, you can strip the chrome on steel shafts and shave graphite ones. Also should be noted you should never heat graphite shafts.

I recently regripped my irons and although I was a little daunted at first, I ended up getting the job done (3i to SW = 9 clubs) in about a half hour.

For the solvent I used everyday lighter fluid, worked a treat. Got my grips on eBay and luckily they had tape included because, to be honest, I'd have no idea what tape to use.

But the lighter fluid is definately sound advice.

People were telling me that there are regripping services in certain pro-shops that do it for £1 a club... this, in my experience, is nonsense...

The cheapest I got quoted was £5 club, and £4 a club if you buy the grips from the shop. I already spend a good slice of my home budget on green fees so the prospect of paying the price of the green fee at Royal Portrush GC for regripping my clubs forced me to go DIY.

I'm glad I did!

I my Golf Club we only charge customers for the grips, fitting is free of charge (Unless your a cheap sod and have got the grip somewhere else but want us to fit it then we charge them £2) if you have 9 or more Clubs re-gripped at the same time we then offer further discount. Small price to pay really to have the job done for you and properly. I've seen some clubs gripped by the members themselves, they are aligned all wrong, some have bulges, even seem some that are floppy at the end where they haven't got them pushed on the whole way.

An old method, and I found easier was to use a 2ltr Pop bottle to hold either White Spirit or Petrol. Place the Taped shaft into it and shake, making sure the Tape was well lubricated.

Thats a good tip Lyth, also never had any issues with what you describe Chris ie 2" tape, chrome scrapping and there is no problem with low heat on grafite shafts.
