Simple question, I'm sure!

Whilst we've been unable to play due to the weather, I've been thinking about some rules I don't know (most of them!)

My question is, while I know how to correctly mark my ball on the green, what I do not know is how to correctly mark the ball if my marker would be in line with somebodies putt who would be putting before me. I know you can move your mark to the side by one club length, but how do you line up the one club length to the side to make sure you get back to the same point?

Does my question make sense?

Lewis, if your marker is going to interfere with the line of a fellow player, he will ask you to move your marker.

After asking him whether one or two putter heads will suffice  the routine would be to mark you ball, then place the putter, with the toe of the putter directly adjacent to the marker aimed at something in sight to give you an exact line so that you can then return to that exactly. Then place the marker at that point.

Always take extreme care when doing this as it is very easy to forget how many putter heads you have marked away from the original spot.

I tend  to use the very flat plastic markers that would not interfere with the roll of a ball and very rarely get asked to re-mark, because of this.

John, when you say

"with the toe of the putter directly adjacent to the marker aimed at something in sight to give you an exact line"

Do you mean something off the green in the distance?

I'm sure these things are simple to most of you, but as somebody who up to now has only played on my own, I've not yet had to worry about other people on my rounds - but when I do, I want to make no mistakes.....if I can help it

cheers again guys

Very good Paul....

I did try that first, but the results I had mostly did not cover the being on the line of another players putt, the couple that did, did not explain how the lining up of the sideways marking should take place to make sure you got back to the same point on your turn

I too have a pet hate for people who will not at least try to find out themselves first.

I was pulling your leg Lewis take no notice of me bored and lack of golf.

I think John means a target line on the green, like a discolouration near to your marker or a borrow etc, etc. Just a reference point to take you back to your original position.

I use the grip of my putter and keep it in a straight line from my original mark.

Paul.

On the subject of ball marking whilst on the green, Is it legal to mark your ball with your putter, lift ball clean, line up etc then replace?

Only the face of the putter is used to make the ball which is a 2" reference point, A certain playing partner of mine uses that technique and I've heard questioned on a couple of occasions without knowing the correct rule.

The official rule is that you can mark your ball by any means, Paul

Lewis, I thought I exlained it in simple terms but if you watch the video again from David  it will confirm it to you. I think he said mark it on a tree or something.

By actually holding the putter head at rest next to the ball, then lifting ball?? It was questioned as there is no actual marker only a judgement on where exactly the ball lay next to the putter face.

If the R & A say its OK then whom I to argue.

John, you did explain it clearly....I was just clearing it in my confused head.It was the "aimed at something in sight" part I wanted to clear up.

The way I do it, is to place the leading egde of the putter behind the ball, lean over pick the ball up clean it and replace it. All without moving the putter.

If your partner, I wonder who that could be , does it it a dubious manner. Then watch carefully to see the ball is replaced in the exact position, not allowing a 2" leeway...Then impose a penalty on him..That will stop him doing it again

TBH, I've no problem as he's pretty honest But when we've played in a four ball a couple of different players have questioned his technique.

Lewis, when I move my marker I pick something in my eyeline like a tree, building etc that I can refer to when replacing it. Paul, the problem with using your putter to mark your ball the way your partner does is that they use the middle of the putter. Any slight hand movement can result in a movement of the club & will result in the ball being replaced incorrectly. Even more so in this weather if the greens are icy it could slip.

As it's obvious Mr Williams is questioning how I know I have placed my ball back in the same place when aligning against my putter, I can confirm that I line it up with the alignment mark on the top of the head and the face before picking it up.  He is welcome to check that Odessey have remembered to put it on there when the snow clears

I was not questioning you directly Mr Perry, But questioning the time Martin suggested it was illegal to mark the ball as you do. I merely wished to know which is correct!

Oh and answer your blinkin phone, We were supposed to play today where were you

C'mon Wayne I'm bored stiff, We haven't a decent bit of argee bargee on here in ages, let it fester.

If I can't argue with him on a course this is the next best option.

I'm off for a bit of C.O.D anyways, see if I can take my mind off golf, mind you watching the baggies game last night helped immensely
