Hi there just got my new set of clubs at xmas.

Not played in 15 year. 29 year old now.

Went to world of golf driving range in clydebank and oh my god, what a hell of a slice.

Any tips of what i should do and what to try before i get stuck in a rut and cant get out of it.

It's an out to in swing plane.

I only recently started playing, I'm 30. I also had a bad slice to start with - it is now slowly going. The best thing I could suggest is to had a course of lessons. The first 5x 30mins will probably be the basics, grip, stance, basic swing, chipping, putting, etc....After a while putting these basics into practice, I am now in the middle of another course of lessons to JUST sort out my slice and swing

Also......practice and play as often as you can !!! .......oh and try not to fill your head with lots of information as it is more of a hindrence than a help sometimes. Just listen to your pro (if you get one), trust him/her....hopefully they are a good pro !

I was 30 when I first tried golf, Lewis. Only really been playing more often over the last 5 years though.

But it's definitely an out to in swing plane that causes the slice. I.E. Cutting across the ball

I'm have no doubt you could John,

but to be fair I am getting alot from spending sessions with the pro and his academy set up he has at my club....he is also a good coach that has a couple of players on tour. And in the long run the lessons will turn out to be a bargain.

BUT when we meet up John I'll no doubt listen and soak up any information you experienced chaps have to offer

If you are happy with your progress, Lewis then fine, but let me just mention that, IF you are going to improve, then improvement should be rapid under the correct instruction.

If you are still off your current  handicap come the summer then you have been instructed incorrectly.

John, Wayne,

Totally agree with you, which is why the last three weeks on snow and ice have been really bad for me....I've not been able to put in the practice I normally do. I can feel the skills I had acquired slipping from me already - plus I'm not moving forward ! .....and the snow is 6 inches deep at the moment and no sign of it going or even reducing anytime soon.

As far as my handicap goes, my aim (not sure how realistic it is) is to be down to 18 by the end of the year, but I'm hoping to get into 20 as soon as possible......by the time the N'v'S comes around.

Personally Lewis unless I was happy that anything I showed you or taught you, you could do correctly everytime!!! I wouldn't ask you to practise it when your not with me because it is all to easy for the old (Neural Pathways) to come back.

I think I understand what your saying Wayne. My pre-golf natural swing was very out to in and very fast shoulder turn....My pro was amazed I was able to hit the ball as consistantly in the middle of the face as much as I was....just on a rubbish path. He said I have very good strength and hand eye co-ordination.,  go me !!!

I'm able to produce the correct path every time I really concentrate on it, although my ball striking consistancy reduces and I hook to abit. What I'm trying to practice as much as possible is to get my new swing to be natural like my swing is when I really go for the ball - which at the moment still produces a big slice.

I know what I need to practice and I'm happy with why it makes sence and works........I just need to make it natural.

One big problem I had was I was not getting full shoulder turn and was open at impact. I'm on top of that now though

As always, thanks for your help and advice chaps

Dave....if that is the case.....then I'll keep my full on going for it swing as a nice fade. There is only one big dog-leg right at my club and I let the driver fly on it........my slice comes into it's own and is my best par 5 hole

John, I'm sure you're too nice a chap to not help out somebody with their first steps,

I'm sure with my skill level I won't be a threat to anybody in the N'v'S......except for maybe my team.

Andrew, that lengh of time lay off could mean that your swing was not what it used to be. Unless your new clubs have extremely whippy shafts and you're trying to leather it, it would seem that you need some pro advice.
