How do I get my first handicap???

I'm just embarking on my golfing path.....As I think I understand it, I need to complete 3 rounds, add the total then divide by 3 to get my starting h/c ?   Now do I have to be with somebody when I complete these rounds to verify my score? Can I complete these first 3 rounds at any local course? or does it have to be in a comp?

I'm guessing the answer is very simple.....but until you know....you don't know!

cheers

1.  You need to be a member of a club

2. You need to play 3 rounds with a member signing your card.

3. You submit those 3 cards to the Club Secretary.

4. They will work out your handicap

or, alternative if not a memebr of a club

Enter your rounds on here. Be honest with your scores. Golfshake will do the calculations for you

I don't think my wife would 'allow' me to spend £1k a year on membership just yet (or ever if given the choice)........I am a competitive person and inputting lower scores than I achieved would take the gloss off any real progress I hope to make - so it would be real scores all the way

Just throw them into the Golfshake system Lewis as David suggested, good and bad.  Probably be a good idea (well I found it quite useful anyway) to put some basic stats in as well - just add fairways in reg, greens in reg and putts and you can get an idea of your progress and it only takes a second when marking your card.

Lewis,

Where are you going to play, it need not cost £1K to begin with. Crimple Valley is a good start, then drive to Leeds Golf Centre (Wike Ridge) as you get better, then join one of the locals when you are ready.

I'm in Harrogate....locally they all seem on the steeper side. I dare say I'll not become a member any time soon....have to learn how not to hack first, then see if I want to be tied to a particular club or be a free spirit

I had a look at Crimple Valley and it is less than two min from my house....so I may give that a shot tomorrow
